Verstappen Struggles in Belgian GP Practice as McLaren Surges Ahead: A Tricky Day for Red Bull
Max Verstappen describes a challenging day for Red Bull at the Belgian Grand Prix as "very tricky," following a practice session led by McLaren in a 1-2 finish.
Max Verstappen has admitted that finding the optimal setup has been quite challenging, especially after finishing behind both McLarens during the Friday Formula 1 practice session at the Belgian Grand Prix.
McLaren led the pack in the second free practice session at Spa-Francorchamps, with Lando Norris finishing 0.2 seconds ahead of his teammate Oscar Piastri.
McLaren delivered a remarkable performance turnaround at a track where they had previously faced difficulties in dry weather a year earlier.
In the initial practice session, Red Bull showcased their supremacy as Verstappen led the field by a margin of 0.5 seconds.
Speaking about the day's activities, he commented: "We experimented with various adjustments because that's just the nature of Spa. You have sectors one and three, where high speed is crucial, but then there's a lengthy middle sector that demands good speed around the corners.
"It's quite challenging to strike the perfect equilibrium. We're experimenting with various approaches to determine the best option. We'll examine and analyze it immediately. Our initial approach today was fairly optimistic."
"The second session didn't go as well. We need to review a few aspects due to the adjustments we implemented."
Verstappen will face a tougher challenge as he incurs a 10-spot grid penalty due to an engine swap.
Expectedly, Verstappen is focused on the race regarding potential modifications.
"He added, "Ideally, we'll come together for the race, particularly since I'm starting further back due to the engine penalty. We'll aim to make the most of it."
"Obviously, achieving a strong qualifying performance is desired, but the ultimate priority lies in the race itself, which will be our main focus."
Sergio Perez lagged behind, trailing Verstappen by 1.1 seconds.
Sharing his thoughts about the day, he mentioned, "We've been experimenting [with the setup]. We've been making adjustments to it. We just haven't managed to fully harness its potential yet.
"I believe we have gathered a substantial amount of information. The two cars were notably distinct, so it seems we have a significant amount of analysis to undertake for tomorrow."
"Despite the noticeable difference in the pavement, the level of deterioration appears to be significantly severe."
