Under Pressure: Mercedes Recalls EVs, Ford Explores Battery Swapping, and Federal Charging Delays Plague EV Expansion

Mercedes issues an EV recall, Ford explores innovative battery swapping, delays in EV charging network: Highlights from Today's Automotive News

A significant recall affects several of Mercedes' electric vehicles. Ford appears to be considering a fresh approach to battery swapping technology. Plus, what's causing the slow rollout of the government's EV charging stations? Find out more in this update from Green Car Reports.

Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for almost 15,000 electric vehicles due to a software glitch that could cause the high-voltage system to turn off. This problem stems from a flaw within the vehicle's diagnostic system, not the battery itself, and necessitates a visit to the dealership for a software update.

A new patent filing suggests that Ford is exploring the possibility of electric vehicle battery swapping through drive-in docking stations. This approach, which focuses on smaller, modular batteries, could significantly change the current landscape dominated by full-pack replacements, as practiced by firms such as Nio and Ample, especially for fleet vehicles or various mobility solutions.

Why is the progress of the $7.5 billion federal electric vehicle (EV) charging network, which received funding in 2021, so sluggish? So far, just eight stations across six states have been inaugurated, a report indicates. The slow pace is primarily due to the responsibility falling on individual states, which must navigate a complex array of public and private utilities, regulatory bodies, and bureaucratic systems.
