Toto Wolff Weighs In: McLaren Urged to Implement Team Orders for Lando Norris Amid Tight F1 Title Race
Toto Wolff Suggests McLaren Implement Team Orders to Benefit Lando Norris
Mercedes Chief Weighs In on McLaren's Strategy Discussion
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has hinted that it might be time for McLaren to consider enforcing team directives as the Formula 1 championship nears its end.
McLaren seemed poised to take full advantage of Max Verstappen's challenging weekend at Red Bull by securing the top two starting positions at the Italian Grand Prix. However, their leading driver Lando Norris, who started in pole position, dropped to third place after an early tussle with his teammate Oscar Piastri on the opening lap.
Piastri boldly overtook his teammate on the exterior of the Della Roggia chicane, and then Norris dropped a spot to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc at the next turn.
Norris secured a third-place finish, trailing behind Piastri and Leclerc, and reduced Verstappen's lead in the championship standings to 62 points. This development came as Verstappen finished in sixth place, with eight races left in the season.
"Wolff expressed that being a top competing racing team presents a unique dilemma, likening it to being caught between a difficult decision. He shared this perspective in response to a question about his thoughts on McLaren's choice to let their drivers compete against each other, stating, 'On one hand, they're competitors, just as we are.'"
"Our aim is to ensure the most suitable candidate emerges victorious, yet when it begins to adversely affect the team's efficiency and create discord, what measures do we then take?"
"The team consistently finds itself at a disadvantage because when you solidify roles and begin to issue directives within the team, what you might be going against is the essence of our racing spirit. However, it's crucial that logic and practicality take the lead in these situations."
"In the end, you wouldn't want to miss winning a championship by a mere three to five points, points that could have been effortlessly gained. Therefore, navigating this delicate balance is incredibly challenging, and there's no one-size-fits-all solution for managing it."
Wolff mentioned that Andrea Stella, the team principal of McLaren, might need to reconsider their 'Papaya Rules' and shift away from his approach that's deeply rooted in the spirit of racing.
"Wolff mentioned, "When it comes to Andrea [Stella] and Zak [Brown], there are no better experts in the field. Andrea has witnessed everything unfold numerous times at Ferrari firsthand."
"He possesses the spirit of a racer who is hesitant and prefers to let them compete, but I believe they'll reach a decision following this race… what's our approach to managing this?
"At this point, we began to implement guidelines for interaction, later altering the terminology to 'racing intent' since the term 'rules' seemed too stringent for the drivers."
