Toto Wolff Urges McLaren to Consider Team Orders for Lando Norris Amidst F1 Title Chase
Toto Wolff Suggests McLaren Might Opt for Team Orders to Support Lando Norris
Mercedes Chief Shares Views on McLaren's Strategy Discussion
Mercedes leader Toto Wolff has hinted that it's time for McLaren to consider enforcing team orders as the Formula 1 championship nears its end.
McLaren seemed poised to take full advantage of a disappointing weekend for Red Bull's Max Verstappen by securing both top spots on the starting grid for the Italian Grand Prix. However, Lando Norris, who started in pole position, dropped to third place on the opening lap following a tussle with his teammate, Oscar Piastri.
Piastri executed a bold overtaking maneuver on the outside of the Della Roggia chicane, surpassing his teammate. Shortly after, Norris fell another place as Ferrari's Charles Leclerc overtook him at the next turn.
Norris secured a third-place finish, coming in after Piastri and Leclerc, reducing Verstappen's lead in the drivers' championship to 62 points. This occurred as Verstappen finished in sixth place, with eight races left in the season.
Wolff expressed that when a racing team finds themselves competing at the forefront unexpectedly, they face a difficult dilemma. He pointed out that, like his team, they are competitors, when questioned about his thoughts on McLaren's decision to let their drivers compete against each other.
"Our goal is to ensure the most qualified individual prevails, yet when such competition begins to adversely affect the team's overall effectiveness, the question arises: what should our response be?"
The team consistently finds itself at a disadvantage because when positions are solidified and team directives are imposed, it might not align with our inherent desire for racing. However, it's crucial that logic takes precedence.
"In the end, missing out on a championship by a mere three or five points, points that could have been readily scored, is something you'd want to avoid. Thus, navigating this delicate balance is extremely challenging, and there's no one-size-fits-all solution for managing it."
Wolff mentioned that McLaren's team leader, Andrea Stella, might need to reconsider their 'Papaya Rules' and shift away from his "racers' soul" strategy.
"Wolff mentioned, 'In terms of understanding sports, Andrea [Stella] and Zak [Brown] are at the top. Andrea, having been with Ferrari, has witnessed numerous scenarios unfold right before him."
"He possesses the spirit of a racer who prefers to let the competition unfold naturally, yet it seems they will reach a decision regarding their approach after this race concludes."
"At this point, we began to implement what were initially called the rules of engagement. However, we later adjusted the terminology to 'racing intent' since the term 'rules' seemed too stringent for the drivers."
