Title: “Marc Marquez Breaks Nearly Three-Year Winless Streak with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted that he "pressured himself" to have an "ideal" weekend at the Aragon MotoGP.
"In the Sprint race, I wasn't having fun because I was aware of the significance of today."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year stretch without a win by securing a victory at last weekend's Aragon MotoGP. He referred to the weekend as "perfect".
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez did not record a lap time in the Warm Up session, which was the only session he did not lead. This session was affected by rain from Saturday night through Sunday morning, making the track wet.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez said during the post-race press conference. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose along with my team to remain in the pit."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we had an incredible sensation right from the start," he mentioned. "The race was extremely lengthy, and it was challenging to keep my emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line felt like I shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, winning this was unbelievable. Right away, thoughts of the journey we went through, the people supporting me, and my family – including my girlfriend and my brother Alex Marquez – came to mind."
"They provided me with significant assistance, and the Gresini team particularly offered me a chance. I came in as a new rider, aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. Now, we have set new goals and will continue to push forward."
Marquez established a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various matters in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he remarked. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's constantly a celebration there."
Aside from that, the most important factor was the support of those around me. In extremely challenging circumstances, having a compassionate and supportive team, who were even more affected by the situation than I was, made all the difference.
"The celebration felt quite unusual because, in other races, the adrenaline was much higher when securing second or third place, compared to today, which was driven more by emotion than by adrenaline."
Marquez acknowledged feeling a bit of pressure to secure a win in the Grand Prix after leading in every session except the rain-affected Warm Up on Sunday morning.
"I felt the weight of expectations today," he remarked. "If you noticed during the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That’s why I made an effort to stay focused. When you have the speed, it seems like you can handle things better, stay consistent, and make smart decisions; but you're still the same person. Without the speed, however, managing the situation becomes incredibly challenging."
"Let’s aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to keep up with the leading competitors."
After securing a victory, Marquez places it on the same level as his 2021 German Grand Prix win, which marked his first triumph following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as my performance in Germany in 2021."
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and tough times, the significance of each win changes."
While it's accurate that I've achieved 60 wins, those two triumphs, along with my inaugural MotoGP victory, stand out as the most significant. They provide a unique boost to your confidence, offering an extra sense of assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for a long time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding; it felt effortless, and I was in the zone. However, I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he revealed that he believed a win was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez expressed confidence that a race victory is on the horizon. He acknowledged that they will have their chances. However, he emphasized that contending for the championship requires continued effort and hard work.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
