Title: “Livio Suppo Reflects on Honda’s Missed Opportunity: The Unfulfilled Dream Team of Marc Marquez and Casey Stoner
"Dream team aspirations for Marc Marquez and Casey Stoner, but they had their own unique qualities…"
"Everyone had their distinct traits," Livio Suppo observes.
Livio Suppo has shared his thoughts on how close Honda came to teaming up Marc Marquez and Casey Stoner.
Under Suppo's leadership, Honda dominated the MotoGP scene, securing championships initially with Stoner and later with Marquez.
Teaming them up is one of the most fascinating partnerships that never happened…
“The goal was to create an ideal team featuring Marquez and Stoner,” Suppo mentioned to Relevo.
"Every individual was unique, possessing distinct characteristics."
"However, it's quite fascinating because each of them were riders who consistently put forth their utmost effort and possessed a talent that was truly delightful."
"When you have a strong love for motorcycles, watching them race on the track brings immense joy and fulfillment."
However, they were quite distinct from one another.
Stoner's unexpected decision to retire from MotoGP at the young age of 27 dashed any chances of him teaming up with Marquez.
The concept of them teaming up at Repsol Honda originated in 2013, which was Marquez's first year as a rookie.
Rather, Marquez teamed up with Dani Pedrosa and clinched the championship on his initial try.
Suppo commended Pedrosa, noting that given his body size and the combined weight of him and the motorcycle, his accomplishment was particularly challenging.
"This demonstrated his extraordinary talent and unique sensitivity."
However, Pedrosa concluded his career as the most accomplished rider in MotoGP history without winning a championship.
"It seems to have been an issue of opportunities," stated Suppo.
Despite everything, Dani enjoyed a remarkable career in sports, amassing millions of fans globally who recognized the immense challenges he overcame.
"Therefore, I believe he should feel extremely proud and satisfied with the career he has achieved."
Suppo shared his thoughts, saying, “Among all the riders I’ve collaborated with, Nicky Hayden was undoubtedly the one I formed the closest friendship with.”
"The reality is that whenever I have collaborated with the riders, I have made an effort to avoid forming friendships. I think it's important to keep a clear boundary between being a team leader and maintaining professionalism."
"However, for instance, nowadays I am friends with Capirossi and frequently converse with Pedrosa…"
