The Uncertain Future of MotoGP’s Augusto Fernandez: A Quest for Redemption Amidst Career Turmoil
The candid truth from MotoGP's most vulnerable competitor
"I'm unsure about the future, but there's still half a year to go."
Augusto Fernandez seems to be the rider most at risk of not having a MotoGP motorcycle for the upcoming season.
In 2025, the MotoGP teams will see a refreshed pair racing for the KTM factory team, consisting of Brad Binder and Pedro Acosta, while Maverick Vinales and Enea Bastianini will be joining forces at Tech3.
Consequently, Jack Miller and Fernandez have exited.
"Currently, I find myself in the most terrible predicament," Fernandez confided to Relevo about his poor performance, just before it was announced that he would be substituted.
"I'm aware there's plenty more to come. Over half the year remains."
"Thus, it might be considered torment."
"I'm uncertain about the future, but six months still remain."
"I don't envision myself enduring such a difficult experience throughout that period."
"Therefore, it's essential for us to muster resilience and flip the script on our current predicament, given that there's a wealth of valuable insights from fellow riders that we can emulate."
"We need to make the best of the rest of this season and then we'll evaluate our position next year. But at the very least, let's change our current trajectory."
A year ago, KTM demonstrated significant confidence in Fernandez by choosing him over Pol Espargaro, opting for the rider with more experience when faced with the decision to demote one of them.
Acosta's remarkable debut season at Tech3 has proven to be a challenge for his teammate, Fernandez.
In 2022, Fernandez clinched the championship title in Moto2, yet has struggled to display his best performance in the premier division.
Currently searching for a fresh position for the upcoming season, spots available in the MotoGP lineup are extremely limited.
Gresini is in search of a new rider to fill the spot left by Marc Marquez, while Trackhouse is considering swapping out one of their existing riders.
Honda and Yamaha boast more seasoned alternatives.
Speculation is rife that Fernandez might shift his focus to World Superbikes if he doesn't improve his performance before the year ends.
It's worth noting that Fabio di Giannantonio unexpectedly rescued his MotoGP career last year. Facing unemployment with no alternatives in sight, he suddenly hit a career-high performance.
Fernandez may require something akin to persist in MotoGP.
