Sergio Perez’s 2026 Seat in Jeopardy Despite New Red Bull Deal: Insider Insights
According to insider sources, Sergio Perez's position for the 2026 season might not be secure after all. Is Sergio Perez's spot for 2026 truly guaranteed?
Sergio Perez's recent two-year contract with Red Bull is said to not ensure him a spot on the team for the 2026 season.
Perez may have anticipated that signing a contract extension with Red Bull, which was set to expire this year, would put an end to rumors about his future.
However, team principal Christian Horner clarified that the new agreement is a two-year deal, stating, "1+1=2, so it’s a two-year contract."
He mentioned that every contract is detailed, but the specifics are confidential between the driver and the team.
Craig Slater from Sky Sports has now stated: "Does he need to achieve certain performance goals to secure that second year?"
"According to a source, that is most likely true."
In essence, even though Perez is confirmed for the 2025 F1 season, he will need to prove himself again for the 2026 season, despite it being covered by his current contract.
This would allow Red Bull to reconsider their choices once more.
Conversations have reignited concerning Max Verstappen’s teammate following two back-to-back poor performances.
Perez did not complete the grand prix races in both Monaco and Canada.
Helmut Marko stated that the accident he had in Monaco resulted in a financial loss of $2-3 million for Red Bull.
Perez has been eliminated in Q1 during each of the last two races.
Returning his impaired vehicle to the pit lane in Canada has led to a three-position penalty on the starting grid for this weekend's Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix.
Perez is facing increasing challenges, which have arisen at the same time as his new contract.
In the past, the Mexican driver has been the perfect complement to Verstappen.
In the initial stages of the season, specifically in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Japan, Perez secured second place, trailing Verstappen and achieving an ideal outcome for their team.
