Rosberg Reaches Out: How a Sports Psychologist Helped Him and Could Aid ‘Glass-Half Empty’ Lando Norris
Nico Rosberg messaged Lando Norris, who tends to see the negative side of things.
"I sent a direct message to Lando," Nico Rosberg clarified.
Nico Rosberg shared a message with Lando Norris and disclosed that a sports psychologist had a positive impact on his career.
McLaren's Norris secured the pole position at the F1 Italian Grand Prix last weekend. However, following an initial lap skirmish with his teammate Oscar Piastri, he ultimately allowed Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to clinch the victory.
This season, Norris has clinched his first two grand prix victories and is currently competing for the drivers’ championship, trailing the leader, Max Verstappen, by 62 points.
Natalie Pinkham evaluated Norris on the Sky F1 podcast, stating: "He openly admits, 'I'm not performing at the level expected of a world champion.' He is openly critical of himself."
"It's like a self-fulfilling prophecy; if you keep telling yourself, 'I'm weak and I mess up,' then you end up making those mistakes."
"It's essential to present your most confident self and fully believe in it."
The 2016 Formula 1 champion, Rosberg, responded by saying that a sports psychologist would advise you to have faith in your own words.
"I sent a direct message to Lando, thinking he might find my experiences relevant since I've already gone through similar situations."
"He tends to see the glass as half-empty instead of half-full."
“He is genuinely sincere, which is wonderful. However, it's possible to be sincere and still see the glass as half-empty.”
The prime instance was his performance during the qualifying lap. Lando secured pole position but then directed his post-qualifying comments towards acknowledging his mistakes, saying, 'I messed up my lap, I'm sorry to my team, I was behind after Turn 1 and Turn 2…'
"He might have mentioned that 'the majority of the lap was flawless.' Both statements are accurate."
However, he chose to concentrate on his error and the negative aspects, rather than acknowledging the rest, which was exceptional.
"I wish and urge him to consider that."
"His mindset will always be somewhat vacant. That's just his nature, and it's mine as well."
"You can influence outcomes by adjusting your message. When you deliberately modify your speech, it can create a beneficial cycle that also affects your thinking."
Enlisting the help of a sports psychologist enabled Rosberg to achieve his goal of becoming an F1 champion in his last season.
He mentioned that he had been collaborating with a sports psychologist for a decade and had significantly increased the intensity of their sessions in the past year.
"He put in a significant amount of work, dedicating two hours to training and studying every other day all winter long."
"The experience was more challenging than the physical workouts."
"It was extremely challenging, yet immensely rewarding and meaningful."
"Outside of sports, I gained a lot of knowledge and advanced significantly."
