Rosberg Urges McLaren to ‘Pounce on Red Bull’s Weakness’ and Support Norris’ Championship Bid
McLaren urged to "act quickly" and "exploit Red Bull’s vulnerabilities"
"They are not providing Lando with the optimal support to compete for the title"
Nico Rosberg has called on McLaren to adopt a more aggressive approach in their two championship fights against Red Bull.
Lando Norris is still 62 points behind Max Verstappen, who leads the drivers' championship. Meanwhile, McLaren has narrowed the gap to only eight points behind Red Bull in the constructors' championship.
McLaren's performance and outcomes indicate they might challenge Red Bull in both championships, although their approach to team orders is being scrutinized.
Lando Norris, who started in pole position, had a tussle with his teammate Oscar Piastri during the opening lap of the F1 Italian Grand Prix last weekend. In the end, both drivers were overtaken by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
"We require McLaren to make some adjustments," Rosberg mentioned on the Sky F1 podcast.
"They aren't putting Lando in the best position to compete for the championship."
"As enthusiasts, we thoroughly enjoyed watching Piastri compete with Norris at Turn 4. It had us gripping our seats in excitement. In that regard, kudos to McLaren."
"But perhaps most crucially for everyone, Lando has a chance at winning the championship."
"It would be incredibly exciting to see two friends competing against each other."
"In order for that to occur, McLaren must offer greater backing to Lando and implement the 'hold position' strategy."
“Letting both of their drivers compete against each other might have led to their loss.”
Natalie Pinkham offered another viewpoint: "Observing the expressions of the McLaren team members on the podium after the race was very telling."
"These two drivers were extremely frustrated. Who would have thought a year ago that they would be upset about finishing in second and third place?"
"Maybe next year will be their time. This season might be one for development. From the start, Max showed strong performance, and no one could have predicted that Lando would be contending for the championship."
"Significant changes are not expected in 2025. The current actions are laying the groundwork for the upcoming year. McLaren might need to exercise patience in this situation."
Nevertheless, Rosberg, the 2016 F1 champion, held a
Rosberg asserted that McLaren has every reason to be eager, given their strong chances of winning both the constructors' and drivers' championships.
"Next year is uncertain. It’s possible that Mercedes could become strong again or Ferrari might keep making strides."
"You can't simply wait. I believe they need to act swiftly and take advantage of the current opportunities."
"Take advantage of Red Bull's vulnerability and seize the opportunity. In Formula 1, a second chance is never guaranteed."
