Ricciardo Triumphs Over Marquez in High-Speed Red Bull Sailing Showdown Ahead of Spanish F1 Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo outpaces Marc Marquez in a Red Bull-sponsored boat competition, setting the stage for the upcoming Spanish Formula 1 race in Barcelona this weekend.
Formula One champion Daniel Ricciardo, with eight race victories under his belt, competed against MotoGP sensation Marc Marquez in the Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailing competition.
The duo, sponsored by Red Bull, traded their usual four and two-wheeled sports for aquatic adventures, nearly hitting speeds of 90km/h on the water.
Ricciardo secured the win, surpassing the future Ducati factory team rider set for 2025.
Following his victory, Ricciardo expressed: "Emerging from the water while foiling makes the boats incredibly swift, and everything from their agility to precision is remarkable.
"Just like us, you experience the breeze, and so does Marc when he's cycling, but unless the conditions are rainy, we hardly encounter any water."
"Occasionally, you'll encounter a wave and end up drenched!"
Marquez, currently in third place in the MotoGP rankings, trailing Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia, has emerged as a standout rider since moving to Ducati, after spending 11 years with Honda.
Adapting to an entirely new pace, Marquez noted, “The main question I had was how they grasp and comprehend the necessary actions.
"Grasping the sensations inside the boat becomes incredibly challenging because the moment it takes off, the ride becomes exceptionally smooth."
"The velocity feels entirely distinct. While it may be slower in terms of kilometres per hour, the sensation of speed was incredibly intense."
"When you're part of it, it doesn't seem like you're soaring. However, when I noticed Daniel's boat gliding alongside us, it hit me that we were also airborne. Our ride was effortlessly gliding on the foils."
Following a challenging comeback to Formula 1 with Red Bull, Ricciardo demonstrated impressive performance in Canada, securing his initial points of the season in a grand prix.
The Australian secured a remarkable fifth position in qualifying, missing the pole position by less than two-tenths of a second.
Delving deeper into the specifics of the sailing boats they competed in with Marquez, Ricciardo described, "The construction and design of these boats give a sensation very similar to sitting in the cockpit of a Formula One car."
"The wind greatly affects them, meaning there’s a notable overlap with aerodynamics. It closely mirrors our work, which requires precise, minor adjustments and a high degree of delicacy."
