Ricciardo Apologizes After Hulkenberg Clash: Drama and Penalties at the Italian GP
Daniel Ricciardo comments on collision with Nico Hulkenberg: "I believed there was enough room; I said sorry"
Daniel Ricciardo addresses the incident with Haas during the F1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after the two drivers collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo was in a contest with Nico Hulkenberg in the middle of the pack during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed there was enough room, but then experienced a collision. This incident pushed Hulkenberg's Haas off the track, allowing Kevin Magnussen, Hulkenberg's teammate, to overtake.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident, but was subsequently required to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car during the initial penalty at his pitstop.
Ricciardo concluded a difficult race at his home circuit for the Red Bull team, finishing in 13th place.
In the end, we just didn’t have the speed today, even before factoring in the penalties," he stated.
"We made an effort, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I initially believed there was enough space, but I realized we made contact, meaning I didn't provide sufficient room. I offered my apologies."
"It's challenging because you push yourself to the limit, but even the tiniest differences can have a big impact."
"The car performed reasonably well afterward, and we exerted maximum effort with the resources available. From Friday afternoon until today, I aimed to extract the best possible performance from the vehicle."
"From my perspective, I'm feeling much improved this weekend, and we were nearly able to earn some points."
Tsunoda Leaves Italian GP ‘Frustrated’
Laurent Mekies from RB stated that Nico Hulkenberg influenced their performance at the Italian Grand Prix. A collision between the Haas driver and Yuki Tsunoda forced the Japanese driver to retire from the race.
"I'm quite disappointed; it's unfortunate because my race ended just a few laps in after colliding with Nico," Tsunoda stated.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he froze, lost control, and collided with me."
"Regrettably, we had to pull out of the race due to damage sustained to the vehicle's floor."
“I immediately sensed the issue and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding uncontrollably and I just couldn’t manage to drive it."
“Up next, we have races in Baku and Singapore. Our vehicle is expected to perform strongly at these locations, so we’re optimistic about having successful weekends.”
Mekies is annoyed about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to lose crucial track time with the newly updated RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it can be said that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which ultimately led to us having to retire the car," he explained.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki's retirement is missing out on 40 laps that could have helped us better comprehend the new updates we implemented here."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because we didn't properly carry out the initial one."
"We need to reassess our protocols in light of this situation and take lessons from today's error. While such incidents do occur, our pit crew has typically performed outstandingly this season."
