Ricciardo Apologizes After Clash with Hulkenberg: Penalty-Heavy Italian GP for RB Amid Tsunoda’s Frustration
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo responds to the incident involving Haas during the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided during the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo was competing against Nico Hulkenberg in the middle of the pack during the first lap of Sunday’s race at Monza when the two collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed there was enough room, but then experienced a collision. This incident caused Hulkenberg's Haas to be pushed onto the dirt, resulting in him losing a position to his teammate, Kevin Magnussen.
The Australian driver initially received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he was later handed a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car during the pitstop while he was serving the initial penalty.
Ricciardo finished a challenging race at his home circuit for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
“In the end, our speed just wasn’t there today, penalties aside,” he commented.
"We made an effort, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but I collided with Nico in Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I initially believed there was enough space, but then I felt the collision and realized I hadn't left sufficient room. I apologized for that."
"It's challenging because you push yourself to the limit, but even the tiniest differences can be crucial."
"The car seemed fine afterward, and we gave it our all with the resources available. I aimed to extract the utmost performance from the vehicle starting from Friday afternoon until today."
"I personally feel much better this weekend, and we were nearly able to score points."
Tsunoda Felt 'Disappointed'
The Italian Grand Prix for Red Bull was heavily influenced by Nico Hulkenberg, as explained by team member Laurent Mekies. A crash involving Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the premature end of the Japanese driver's race.
"I'm quite annoyed; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda expressed.
"I attempted to give ample room, but it appeared he froze, resulting in him losing control and colliding with me."
“Regrettably, we had to pull the car out of the race due to damage sustained on the floor.”
"I noticed it instantly and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding, and I just couldn't control it."
“We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, where our car is expected to perform strongly. We're optimistic about having successful weekends at these events.”
Mekies is frustrated about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to miss important track time with the new RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it could be argued that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel faced a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Afterwards, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki's retirement is missing out on 40 laps that would have helped us better understand the new updates we implemented here."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because the initial one was not carried out properly."
"We will have to re-evaluate our procedures in this situation and take lessons from the error made today. Although these incidents occur, our pit crew's performance has mostly been outstanding this season."
