Revealed: Dani Pedrosa’s Near-Switch to Yamaha in 2017 and the Alternate MotoGP History That Never Was
Dani Pedrosa's surprising disclosure: Nearly joined Yamaha in 2017 to take over Jorge Lorenzo's motorcycle
Dani Pedrosa shares with Jorge Lorenzo an untold narrative that could have altered the course of history
Dani Pedrosa informed Jorge Lorenzo that he was almost chosen to take Lorenzo's place at Yamaha during the 2017 season.
The former adversaries found themselves seated inside a boxing ring on a Spanish TV show, intensely questioning one another about their intense competition.
A piece of information has come to light regarding an overlooked incident where a rider almost swapped places six years back.
"In 2017, I nearly sealed a deal with Yamaha," Pedrosa revealed to Marca.
He said to Lorenzo, "Upon your departure from Yamaha to join Ducati.
"The effort was made to select either Maverick Vinales or myself."
"As your competitor, I was always drawn to your bicycle due to its features, and I desired to experience what it was like to be on it."
"That period marked the closest I had ever been."
As of the close of 2016, Lorenzo had secured three MotoGP titles, all achieved while riding for Yamaha.
Ending the 2016 season in third place, trailing behind winner Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi, Lorenzo departed for what would turn out to be an unsuccessful stint with Ducati.
It seemed that a Yamaha seat was left empty when the Japanese maker apparently didn't manage to secure Suzuki's Vinales.
Pedrosa's potential switch from Honda to Yamaha could have altered the course of MotoGP history.
Ultimately, it didn't happen, and Yamaha ended up recruiting Vinales.
Pedrosa continued with Honda until he ended his full-time riding career, retiring as the most accomplished MotoGP rider never to win a championship.
He has become a key figure in KTM's ascent through his role as their test rider, captivating a new wave of fans with his performances in wildcard entries.
