Red Bull’s Strategic Misstep at Hungarian GP: Marko Admits Fault as Verstappen’s Frustration Boils Over
Helmut Marko highlights a significant mistake made by Red Bull, which left Max Verstappen visibly angered.
"We totally underestimated the situation, and Mercedes capitalized on our oversight."
Helmut Marko has acknowledged that Red Bull is completely accountable for Max Verstappen's unsatisfactory performance at the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix, admitting "the team is solely to blame for this."
Verstappen ended up in fifth place at the Hungaroring on Sunday, marking a highly disappointing day for the Red Bull racer.
The driver from the Netherlands found himself trailing behind Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton twice due to Red Bull being overtaken with a strategy move.
Verstappen was visibly frustrated with Red Bull's lax tactical choices, expressing his anger through the team's radio communication.
Verstappen's attempt to pass Hamilton at Turn 1 backfired when he miscalculated the maneuver, leading to a crash.
The Dutch driver managed to emerge without any harm but fell to fifth place.
After the race, Marko acknowledged that Red Bull underestimated the challenges of passing.
"Marko explicitly blamed the team for the situation, according to statements made to Austrian broadcaster ORF."
Every simulation led to a varied change in the overtaking strategies. However, we entirely underestimated this, allowing Mercedes to capitalize on our oversight.
"I haven't had the chance to meet Verstappen in person yet, but that's going to change shortly. We deliberately chose to deal with the frustration coming through the team radio, believing that fresher tyres would give us a speed advantage later on. Those familiar with Verstappen understand that this kind of outcome is within the realm of possibility. However, airing grievances over the team radio isn't required."
"We couldn't overtake Hamilton, contrary to what was expected. It was our error, including the spot where Max re-entered the track following his initial pit stop. We acknowledge our mistake. It was a significant misjudgment concerning the attempt to pass."
McLaren's first and second place finish has reduced Red Bull's advantage in the F1 constructors' championship to a mere 51 points.
Marko acknowledges that Red Bull "desperately requires" the summer hiatus for reorganization.
"Marko emphasized the critical need for the summer vacation, stating, "It's imperative for us." He reflected on the season's start, noting, "Initially, during the first three races, we believed this season would mirror the last. However, a sudden shift occurred."
"Max hasn't adapted to this, and we also haven't fully grasped the necessity of battling fiercely with rivals. This scenario undoubtedly enhances the experience for fans and reporters, but it's something we must withstand and ultimately conquer.
"We continue to hold the top position in both competitions. With many races yet to come, it's premature to consider anything a lost cause. However, we must avoid minor and avoidable errors at all costs."
