Red Bull Accelerates F1 2024 Development Strategy, Refutes Lethargy in Upgrades Ahead of Monaco Grand Prix
Red Bull "actively pursuing enhancements" in their F1 development strategy for 2024, explained
Red Bull has clarified their strategy toward the development of their Formula 1 car for 2024, emphasizing that they are "actively pursuing improvements" with their updates.
Competitors Ferrari and McLaren have narrowed the distance to Red Bull by implementing considerable improvements to their vehicles at the latest events, whereas Red Bull has made minor enhancements to their RB20 model, a car that has secured victories in five out of the seven races this season.
For the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix this weekend, Red Bull has opted for a high downforce rear wing configuration to adapt to the specific challenges presented by the narrow and winding street track.
"An upgrade's appearance doesn't always reflect its effectiveness in terms of aerodynamics," Paul Monaghan, the chief engineer at Red Bull, explained to reporters, including those from Crash.net, in Monaco.
"We don't have a vehicle that's lagging behind, necessitating major modifications. Our car is highly competitive, and I believe we thoroughly grasp its capabilities. There’s no reason to question our approach to development."
"Upcoming enhancements are on the horizon. The extent of our production needs will dictate the timing of their implementation. This isn't a response to the recent challenges we faced, particularly the setback in Miami. Rest assured, our strategy is already in place."
"We are not delaying the updates. As soon as they're prepared, they'll be launched."
In response to inquiries about whether Red Bull intends to roll out a significant update, team leader Christian Horner stated, “Our approach is more gradual. We've added some components gradually, and they've performed as expected."
"However, as you approach the peak of the curve, you encounter a principle of diminishing returns regarding the extent of development that justifies its inclusion in the vehicle."
"Due to the budget limit, we must carefully choose the timing for implementing those improvements."
Horner noted on the topic of teams coming closer in performance, stating, “Entering the third year under these rules, it’s a natural outcome for the teams to start to align more closely.
"It's remarkable that we've been able to maintain the lead for such an extended period. However, as the vehicles start to resemble each other more in appearance and design, leading to similar lap times, it's clear that intense rivalry is on the horizon."
"We anticipate that in Monaco, given its distinct circuit configuration on the schedule, everything will hinge on the single lap set for tomorrow afternoon."
