Racing Royalty: Gabor Talmacsi and Giancarlo Fisichella Champion Hungary’s Balaton Park as MotoGP’s Next Big Stage
Former 125cc Grand Prix World Champion from Hungary, Gabor Talmacsi, alongside ex-Formula 1 racer Giancarlo Fisichella, have voiced their support for Balaton Park.
Gabor Talmacsi, who was Hungary's prominent figure in motorcycle grand prix racing between 2001 and 2010, is optimistic that the recently revealed MotoGP event in Hungary will propel the careers of the nation's own motorcyclists.
Between 2005 and 2008, Talmacsi clinched victory in nine 125GP races, achieving a historic milestone for Hungary by securing the 125cc championship title
In 2009, he briefly transitioned to the 250cc category, only to end the year with a dozen races in the MotoGP class riding for Scot Honda, achieving a top finish of 12th place.
Following a single season in Moto2, marked by a sole podium finish in 2011, Talmacsi transitioned to World Supersport racing. However, his career on the track was cut short after an incident where shrapnel from a blown engine fractured his tibia, resulting in lasting muscle injuries.
During his peak years in grand prix racing, Talmacsi was immensely popular, drawing crowds of Hungarian supporters to races like the one in Brno, Czech Republic. This fervent fan base fueled the aspiration of hosting a MotoGP event in Hungary.
The plan is to hold the inaugural motorcycle Grand Prix at the newly proposed Balaton Park circuit in 2025, with the event tentatively scheduled for August 22-24, marking the nation's first such race since 1992.
"Talmacsi emphasized that organizing MotoGP and Superbike competitions in Hungary serves multiple purposes beyond the races themselves. It acts as a catalyst for the development of emerging talents, shines a spotlight on the sport, and offers direction to future generations."
I strive to elevate the profile of motorcycling, both as a sport and a mode of transportation, while also focusing on the growth of youth and their understanding of road safety.
"The 2025 competitions have the potential to significantly increase awareness regarding this issue."
The circuit design of Balaton Park will undergo changes in three specific sections to fulfill the criteria for a Grade A license, enabling it to accommodate MotoGP and WorldSBK events.
Ex-Formula 1 Grand Prix champion Giancarlo Fisichella recently experienced the present 4.115km track firsthand from behind the wheel.
"Fisichella expressed his admiration for the unique qualities of the Balaton Park Circuit upon his initial experience driving on it."
"The circuit truly offers a complete package – an exciting mix of rapid turns, demanding tight corners, and sleek zigzag sections."
"This song has a smooth progression that really puts you in the racing mood."
"The initial turn and the conclusion of the rear straightaway are key locations for passing maneuvers. Overall, Balaton Park offers a delightful driving experience."
