Pol Espargaro Weighs In: Could Jorge Martin or Marc Marquez Have Joined KTM?
Jorge Martin was aware of the KTM option, and it’s likely Marc Marquez also had this opportunity. However, we need to be cautious about claiming one rider is superior to another.
Pol Espargaro thinks that either Jorge Martin or Marc Marquez might have signed with KTM for the next season.
The roster for MotoGP riders in 2025 is becoming clearer as Marquez has secured the coveted position with the factory Ducati team, resulting in Martin moving to Aprilia.
KTM's official team will feature Brad Binder and Pedro Acosta, while Maverick Vinales and Enea Bastianini will ride for a revamped Tech3 team equipped with factory bikes.
KTM test rider Espargaro informed Motorsport that Jorge Martin has had the opportunity to ride a motorcycle from the Pierer Mobility Group.
"He received an opportunity to ride a [KTM]."
"Likely, Marquez and other leading riders have experienced it, just as Martín has. I'm merely discussing it."
To put it differently, the factory is essentially placing its hopes on elite riders.
KTM has stated that they did not engage in significant discussions with Marquez, who also minimized the extent of their contact.
Pramac's Martin is currently at the top of the MotoGP championship standings as they head into the next race at Assen, scheduled for the upcoming weekend.
Factory team star and titleholder Pecco Bagnaia trails Martin by 17 points.
Riding a bike from last year, Gresini's Marquez is currently in third place, 35 points behind Martin.
Espargaro remarked: "It's hard to say whether Jorge Martin is superior or inferior to Marquez since Marc is riding an older bike."
“We refer to someone as the best not due to superior riding skills, but because they have won more titles.”
“It's possible that if you place Bagnaia on a KTM bike, he might start winning races. However, as we saw with Jack Miller, even though he had victories with Ducati, he didn’t manage to win after switching.”
Consider Luca Marini, who consistently achieved podium finishes while riding a Ducati. When he switched to a Honda, his performance drastically declined, leading to last-place finishes in every race.
"Do I believe Marini's riding skills have declined this year? No, I don't."
"Has Alex Rins become a less skilled rider since his victories with Suzuki? I don't believe that's the case."
"As a result, determining whether one rider excels over another is quite challenging."
"I agree that he makes more money, holds more titles, has a better media presence, and is more successful commercially."
“However, claiming someone is a superior rider requires caution…”
Espargaro claimed that KTM will soon have the top rider in MotoGP.
“He doesn’t currently have the same resources as Pecco,” he remarked.
"Did Pecco have access to the same resources that Pedro Acosta currently possesses?"
"Imagine Pedro Acosta riding a Ducati."
The manufacturing plants are putting in maximum effort to become the leaders in the industry, and I firmly believe that KTM will eventually achieve the same level of success as Ducati.
“We often discuss who the top riders are based on the number of titles they've won, which is understandable, but…
"Are they the top riders? For instance, is Pecco currently outperforming Pedro Acosta, considering what Acosta is achieving with GasGas?"
