The government of Wales has paused its initiative to shorten the summer break.
According to the suggested plans, the duration of the summer break would be shortened by one week, with this time being reallocated to extend the October half-term break by an additional week
Welsh Education Secretary Lynne Neagle has stated that a decision will not be reached until after the 2026 Senedd elections.
This implies that potential modifications to the academic calendar would not be expected until at least 2028.
For the second time in a month, the Welsh government has postponed implementing a policy, this time halting a proposed farm subsidy program after facing backlash from the agricultural community.
Ms. Neagle noted that the government's survey on changes to the school calendar revealed a sharp division in public opinion.
The restructuring of the academic calendar was among many agreements included in the Labour government's pact with Plaid Cymru, in which the Welsh nationalist party agreed to support the government on multiple fronts.

Tom Giffard, the Conservative shadow education minister, urged that the proposed changes to education in Wales be completely abandoned.
"He emphasized that merely delaying action is unacceptable. He argued that the Labour Party must address the concerns of teachers' unions and stakeholders in tourism and business, all of whom oppose the proposed policy. He believes the policy should be entirely abandoned."
"During the consultation period, we stressed the importance of the Welsh Government paying attention to the opinions of parents, teachers, and students," stated Heledd Fychan, the education spokesperson for Plaid Cymru.
