Perez’s Future in Turmoil: Herbert Labels Him ‘Damaged Goods’ as Red Bull Affirms Commitment Amidst Performance Crisis
Johnny Herbert tags Sergio Perez as "damaged goods" | Describes him as "mentally shattered"
Is there a chance for Sergio Perez to regain his performance level in the latter half of the 2024 F1 campaign?
Former Formula 1 racer Johnny Herbert thinks that Sergio Perez has been mentally defeated, even though Red Bull has promised to support him after the summer break.
Red Bull affirmed to Crash.net that Perez will remain on their racing team for the latter half of the season.
Formula 1 is now entering its summer hiatus, taking a three-week pause before resuming with the Dutch Grand Prix at August's close.
Prior to the formal closure, Red Bull’s leader Christian Horner had a meeting with Helmut Marko to talk about the prospects of Perez.
Currently, Perez is set to continue with Red Bull, teaming up with Verstappen.
Nonetheless, Herbert contends that Perez exhibits no indications of progress, referring to him as "irreparably flawed."
"Sergio Perez had another disappointing weekend, falling from the front row to a lower position, which is not the outcome teams anticipate from their drivers," he commented.
"It's tragic to admit, but at present, he seems to be in a state of ruin. Mentally, he's deeply shattered."
Typically, contracts include a provision related to performance, which may enable Red Bull to end Perez's agreement due to his subpar results over the past few years.
Herbert believes Yuki Tsunoda, not Daniel Ricciardo—who was considered the front-runner—should have been chosen as Red Bull's replacement.
"He suggested that Red Bull consider replacing Perez with Yuki Tsunoda, expressing that Daniel Ricciardo doesn't meet the mark. "Does Daniel deserve a spot at Red Bull? In my opinion, no, not at this time. He hasn't shown enough competitiveness when up against Yuki Tsunoda. Yuki is the driver I'd choose to promote. His performance on the track has gotten better."
"The Daniel that Max is set to face isn't the same as before. Max is under immense pressure. The era when Red Bull was unbeatable is over. Those days are behind us. Now, everything depends on him."
"To maximize your point tally, having two drivers is essential, especially if securing a race victory isn't an option, as has been the case with Max over the recent seasons."
"In such a scenario, the team is compelled to initiate a change, though their options are limited. It appears the decision may come down to either Ricciardo, who carries some uncertainty, or Yuki."
