Pedrosa’s Untold 2017 Yamaha Deal: A Near Miss That Could Have Altered MotoGP History
Dani Pedrosa reveals that he was "close to joining Yamaha in 2017" to take over Jorge Lorenzo's motorcycle. Pedrosa shares this significant piece of history with Lorenzo, highlighting how it could have altered the course of events.
Dani Pedrosa informed Jorge Lorenzo that he came close to taking his spot at Yamaha in 2017.
The longtime adversaries were seated in a boxing ring on a Spanish TV show, intensely questioning each other about their heated competition.
A previously overlooked close call involving a rider change from six years ago has come to light.
According to Marca, Pedrosa mentioned that he almost finalized a deal with Yamaha in 2017.
He mentioned to Lorenzo, "When you departed from Yamaha and joined Ducati."
"There was a decision to either select Maverick Vinales or myself."
"As your competitor, I always desired to try out your bike due to its impressive features. I wanted to envision myself riding it."
"That period was when I felt most connected."
By the conclusion of 2016, Lorenzo had secured his trio of MotoGP titles, all of which he achieved while racing for Yamaha.
In 2016, Lorenzo ended up in third place in the rankings, trailing behind champion Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi. He then made a move to Ducati, which unfortunately did not turn out well.
It seemed that Yamaha had an open spot after the Japanese company apparently couldn’t sign Suzuki’s Vinales.
Pedrosa's almost-switch from Honda to Yamaha could have altered the course of MotoGP history.
However, things didn't turn out that way, and Vinales was ultimately signed by Yamaha.
Pedrosa stayed with Honda for his entire career as a full-time racer, ending his career as the most accomplished MotoGP rider never to have won a championship.
He plays a crucial role in KTM's growth as their test rider and has impressed a new generation with his wildcard appearances.
