Norris and Leclerc Dazzle at Dutch GP: McDonagh’s Driver Ratings Highlight Standout Performances
F1 Driver Assessments for the Netherlands Grand Prix: Standout Performances by Lando Norris and Another Racer, Charles Leclerc
Connor McDonagh evaluates the Formula 1 racers at the Zandvoort circuit for the Dutch GP.
Lando Norris – 9.5
At Zandvoort, Norris showcased remarkable speed, securing the pole position with a more than 0.3s lead over Verstappen. His performance continued to impress on the day of the race, as he led the pack and clinched his second victory in his career. The gap between him and his teammate Piastri was notably significant. Yet, his recent less-than-ideal start prevented him from achieving a flawless score of 10.
Max Verstappen – 9
During the Dutch Grand Prix, Red Bull clearly found themselves in second place, making it difficult to fault Verstappen's showing in his home race. He managed to extract the maximum performance from the RB20 during what was a challenging weekend for his squad.
Charles Leclerc – 9.5
Leclerc delivered an outstanding performance this weekend. Despite starting almost a second behind the pole position, a podium finish seemed out of reach for Ferrari. However, Leclerc executed a flawless race, securing an unexpected spot among the top three.
Oscar Piastri – 6.5
Piastri had a disappointing weekend compared to Norris, especially considering the McLaren's speed at Zandvoort, which suggested they could have secured the top two positions.
Carlos Sainz – 7.5
Sainz managed to bounce back impressively to secure a fifth-place finish after an underwhelming Q2 performance. Despite Leclerc having a noticeable advantage, Sainz finished the race only seven seconds behind, marking a commendable comeback.
Sergio Perez – 7
Considering Perez's performance of late, the Dutch Grand Prix turned out to be a decent showing. He managed to qualify among the top five and secured a sixth-place finish. While not outstanding, it marked an improvement over his recent results.
George Russell – 8.5
Russell remains formidable in Saturday qualifying sessions, securing fourth place in the Mercedes. Nonetheless, rapid tire wear combined with an atypical two-stop strategy led to him only managing a seventh-place finish at Zandvoort.
Lewis Hamilton – 7
A standard 2024 weekend for Hamilton in the Netherlands saw him struggle in qualifying but demonstrate impressive speed during the race.
Pierre Gasly – 9.5
Without a doubt, the highlight of the weekend. Gasly advanced to Q3, outperforming his teammate Ocon who was eliminated early, and also managed to finish ahead of the rest in the midfield. An exceptional performance by the French driver.
Fernando Alonso – 8
It was yet another challenging event for Aston Martin, now seemingly entrenched in Formula 1's middle ranks. Alonso managed to secure a single point following a commendable performance in Q3.
Nico Hulkenberg scored a 7.5 rating after maintaining a strong position within the points zone until he was overtaken by Gasly and Alonso towards the end of the race. He marginally outperformed his teammate Magnussen during the qualifying round.
Daniel Ricciardo – 7
Following a disappointing performance in the qualifiers, Ricciardo managed to mount a solid race, ending in 12th place. It seemed that his team, RB, provided him with a more advantageous strategy compared to Tsunoda.
Lance Stroll – 6.5
This weekend, Stroll couldn't keep pace with Alonso, falling out of the points-scoring positions even though he began the race from a promising spot.
Alex Albon – 7.5
Albon's impressive performance in qualifying was nullified due to a technical violation, leading to his exclusion from the standings. Starting from the end of the grid made it overly challenging for him to earn any points.
Esteban Ocon – 6.5
Ocon was significantly overshadowed by his teammate Gasly during the Zandvoort race. The French driver sensed an issue with his vehicle during the qualifying rounds, particularly after an early elimination in Q1.
Logan Sargeant – 6
Sargeant faced another challenging weekend due to an accident during the third free practice session, preventing him from participating in the qualifying round. Despite this setback, he performed reasonably well in the race, leveraging a one-stop strategy to secure a finish in front of several competitors in the midfield.
Yuki Tsunoda – 7
Despite a strong performance in qualifying, Tsunoda's race strategy of making two pit stops didn't yield the desired results. Moreover, the VCARB team's car lacked the speed necessary to secure points during this event.
Kevin Magnussen – 6.5
Starting from the pit lane after a change in engine components put Magnussen at a disadvantage. Despite his efforts, primarily aimed at aiding his teammate Hulkenberg, it proved insufficient for Haas.
Valtteri Bottas – 7
Bottas had yet another standout weekend, surpassing his team mate Zhou in qualifying by more than a second. In the race, he also maintained a significant lead, finishing 30 seconds in front of Zhou.
Zhou Guanyu – 5.5
Zhou's poor performance streak persists, lacking speed and consistently being outperformed by Bottas.
