Nigel Mansell Weighs in on McLaren’s Team Strategy: Urges Lando Norris to “Step Up” Amid Title Race
Nigel Mansell weighs in on McLaren strategy discussion: 'Lando Norris needs to rise to the occasion'
"In my view, it's crucial for Lando to elevate his performance, ensuring he matches or surpasses Oscar's speed to accomplish what's necessary."
1992 Formula 1 World Champion Nigel Mansell has shared his opinion on McLaren's choice to support Lando Norris for this year's championship, stating that it's now Norris's responsibility to "rise to the occasion".
Norris made an impressive comeback, climbing from 17th place in qualifying to secure a fourth-place finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, closing the gap on Max Verstappen's lead to 59 points.
At McLaren's other garage stall, Oscar Piastri celebrated his best race to date, surpassing Charles Leclerc to secure his second victory in Formula 1.
Despite Piastri being nearer to Norris in the rankings than Norris is to Verstappen, McLaren has decided to support the British driver for the rest of the season.
In an exclusive conversation with Crash.net and Sportscasting, Mansell expressed his belief, stating, "It falls on Lando to elevate his performance. He needs to match Oscar's speed, if not surpass it, to successfully complete his task."
"As Lando expressed, he prefers to achieve it through his own efforts. So, indeed, there's significant pressure on both of them."
Mansell is of the opinion that Piastri could be pivotal in Norris securing a championship, drawing parallels to Sergio Perez's contribution in 2021.
"He expressed enthusiasm, stating it's remarkable when one driver assists another in pursuit of the championship or constructors championship. He highlighted Sergio's exemplary contribution to Red Bull as a prime illustration of such teamwork over the years."
"Recalling Max's previous season's race where he delayed Lewis Hamilton, and recalling instances from years past when Lewis had done similar maneuvers to several others. It certainly brings an added element of intrigue."
Mansell commended McLaren for their decision to support Norris, labeling it as "exceptionally professional."
He believes that they currently possess the top vehicle available. He's confident they will manage the situation excellently and collectively resolve it should the need arise, as one cannot lose a position if they aren't trailing.
"If a person is leading the race while your ally is in third position, it's a compelling reason to concede the victory. Yet, if relinquishing the win still allows for a championship victory, it's a strategy worth pursuing."
"However, if Max is the one in the middle, then what's your plan? Therefore, it will be determined on a per-race basis. Yet, I find it extremely professional that the team has come forward and disclosed their perspective on the plans for the remainder of the year."
