Mercedes protégé and potential F1 driver for the 2025 season, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, has secured his first Formula 2 win on a rain-soaked Silverstone track.
Antonelli emerged victorious in a chaotic 21-lap sprint race marked by a red flag and wet weather at the British Grand Prix track on Saturday afternoon.
The Italian teenager, aged 17, managed to fend off Zane Maloney to secure his first victory in the series. The race was marked by multiple Safety Car periods and an early stoppage caused by deteriorating weather conditions.
In a disastrous turn of events for the leading contenders in the F2 championship, Paul Aron and Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar, both had to withdraw from the race due to different incidents.
With this outcome, Antonelli emerges as the 13th unique victor in F2 for the current season, positioning him ninth in the standings, trailing Aron by 58 points.
Antonelli is rumored to be moving to Mercedes next season, taking the spot of Lewis Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari.
"At Silverstone, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff shared his thoughts with Crash.net, highlighting his admiration for the individual's attitude. Wolff emphasized that the family, who have always been supportive, contribute to an objective evaluation of situations, regardless of whether the outcome is favorable or not."
"He doesn’t seem to be affected by the pressure in terms of his driving and performance, especially since he has a solid comparison with Ollie Bearman."
"It's evident that swimming is a must. His career has advanced quickly; at 17, he doesn't even possess a driver's license for a car."
"The top performers will manage the increasing levels of scrutiny and pressure, which are bound to grow even more."
Oliver Bearman, who will be joining Haas in Formula 1 in 2025 as announced on Thursday, could not complete the race due to a problem that forced him to stop. He races for Prema alongside Antonelli.
