McLaren’s Surprising Surge: Is the Fastest Car in F1 Now in Their Garage?
Is McLaren currently leading with the quickest vehicle in F1?
McLaren's leadership questioned on having the top vehicle in Formula 1
McLaren's leadership has downplayed inquiries regarding possessing the quickest vehicle in Formula 1, despite Lando Norris' victory at the Dutch Grand Prix.
On Saturday, Norris secured the top starting spot and then went on to win the race on Sunday, finishing 22 seconds before runner-up Max Verstappen.
Red Bull has not secured a victory in the last five races, and the event at Zandvoort might mark the occasion when McLaren is recognized for possessing the sport's top-performing car.
Results of the 2024 Formula 1 Netherlands Grand Prix
"The disparity was significant," McLaren's chief executive, Zak Brown, conveyed to Sky Sports.
"We were aware of our speed throughout the weekend. It's not entirely unexpected, but I'm happily taken aback by how wide the margin is."
As soon as Lando moved into an unobstructed space, he managed it with ease.
"We're unaware of the specifics of each path until we arrive."
"The improvements have definitely paid off. However, it's important we stay grounded and not expect such results every single weekend."
When questioned about whether McLaren's vehicle has surpassed the once-dominant Red Bull RB20 in speed, he responded, "It's difficult to say for sure. What's evident is that we possess an exceptionally speedy car.
"Exciting new developments are on the horizon for Monza, a track that offers a unique challenge. It appears that Red Bull is expected to perform well there."
Team leader Andrea Stella noted: "The speed of the car is contingent on the circumstances.
"In locations like Barcelona and Hungary, our vehicle performed well. With the recent upgrades, we're aiming to make it the top performer across all circuits. That's our goal."
Stella remarked on Norris' victory: "Fulfilling, surpassing anticipation."
"We were aware that the car was operating efficiently, yet its speed today caught us pleasantly off guard."
"It's fantastic that Lando was able to secure a commanding win. Oscar found himself caught up in congestion; he was worthy of a top-three finish and had the potential to challenge Verstappen."
McLaren is currently trailing Red Bull by a mere 30 points in the constructors' standings.
"Stella mentioned that we're riding a significant wave and it's something we ought to have faith in, referring to surpassing Red Bull."
"We're committed to giving it our all, yet we're up against Red Bull, a team that has shown dominance in past seasons."
"We possess the capability to attempt it."
Sky Sports' Bernie Collins commented, "They were the team that showed the greatest improvement last year. We wondered, 'Will this trend persist?'"
"This year has been exceptionally surprising. Achieving victory by such a significant lead was beyond our anticipations. Similarly, securing the pole position by that wide a margin was also unforeseen."
At the upcoming F1 Italian Grand Prix in Monza, McLaren, which plans to introduce new improvements, sees another chance to close the gap with Red Bull.
