McLaren’s Dilemma: Toto Wolff Urges Team Orders to Bolster Lando Norris’ Championship Bid
Toto Wolff believes McLaren should prioritize Lando Norris with team orders.
The head of Mercedes shares his opinion on McLaren's team orders discussion.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has indicated that McLaren might need to decide on enforcing team orders as the battle for the F1 championship nears its end.
McLaren seemed to have an ideal chance to take advantage of a challenging weekend for Red Bull's Max Verstappen by securing the top two spots on the starting grid of the Italian Grand Prix. However, pole position holder Lando Norris dropped from first to third on the opening lap following a tussle with his teammate Oscar Piastri.
Piastri overtook his teammate with a bold maneuver on the outside of the Della Roggia chicane, and then Norris dropped another spot to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc at the next turn.
Norris secured a third-place finish, trailing Piastri and Leclerc, and reduced Verstappen’s lead in the drivers’ championship to 62 points with eight races left, as the Dutchman managed only a sixth-place finish.
Toto Wolff commented on McLaren's decision to let their drivers compete, saying, "As a team that is now fighting at the top, they're in a tough position. On one hand, they are competitors just like us."
"Our goal is to ensure the most deserving individual succeeds, but when it begins to create issues and affect team performance, what steps do you take in response to that?"
"The team often ends up losing because if you lock positions and enforce team orders, it might not align with the spirit of racing, but the logical approach must take precedence."
Ultimately, no one wants to miss out on winning a championship by a margin of just three or five points that could have been easily secured. Balancing this is extremely challenging, and there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution on how to manage it.
Wolff suggested that McLaren's team leader, Andrea Stella, might need to reconsider their 'Papaya Rules' and shift from his current "racers' soul" strategy.
Toto Wolff commented that Andrea Stella and Zak Brown have an unparalleled understanding of the sport. He noted that Andrea, in particular, has witnessed numerous situations firsthand during his time at Ferrari.
"He possesses the spirit of a true racer, reluctant to intervene and preferring to let the competitors race freely. However, I believe a decision will be reached following this event… what approach will we take?"
"This is when we began to outline the guidelines for participation, later modifying the term to 'racing intent' as 'rules' seemed too strict for the drivers."
