Exclusive Insight from Red Bull: The Parallels Between Max Verstappen, Roger Federer, and Michael Jordan
Pierre Wache of Red Bull opens up to Crash.net about the unique qualities of Max Verstappen.
Red Bull recognizes parallels between Max Verstappen and other legendary athletes due to his unique ability to perform feats “that no one else can replicate”.
Verstappen has secured the Formula 1 drivers' championship three times in a row and is on track to claim his fourth global title in the 2024 season, having emerged victorious in seven out of the 14 races conducted thus far.
At just 26 years old, this Dutch driver is hailed as one of the all-time greats in racing, having achieved 61 grand prix wins, secured the pole position 40 times, and landed on the podium 107 times over the course of 199 races since making his groundbreaking debut in 2015.
In an exclusive interview with Crash.net during the Belgian Grand Prix, Red Bull's technical director, Pierre Wache, compared Verstappen to legendary figures in various sports.
"Wache explained that Verstappen's uniqueness stems from embodying the qualities of legendary figures across various sports."
Certain individuals possess unique abilities that seem incomprehensible to others. The reasons behind these capabilities remain unclear, yet it's simply what they can achieve.
"He resembles icons such as Roger Federer and Michael Jordan, individuals who possess the ability to achieve feats beyond the reach of others."
The person behind the wheel acts as the master of the vehicle, possessing unique abilities to manage and maneuver the car unlike anyone else.
"It enables him to simultaneously liberate some mental space for driving while considering his needs and desires."
"His insights are intriguing because he drives the car to its maximum potential, in a way that no one else does."
Wache highlighted the importance of input from Verstappen and his teammate Sergio Perez, emphasizing its role in Red Bull's efforts to enhance their vehicles.
"The input we receive from the drivers plays a crucial role in our development process and in our solutions, because creating a fast car is essentially not challenging," he mentioned.
"The challenge lies in creating a car that's fast yet drivable for the person behind the wheel. Personally, if I were operating the vehicle, I wouldn't be capable of maximizing its potential performance."
"The way this type of car is driven is highly specific, making the driver's approach to handling it crucial."
