Marc Marquez Triumphs in Damp FP1 as Emilia Romagna GP Kicks Off at Misano
Emilia Romagna MotoGP: Marc Marquez leads Jorge Martin in first practice session
San Marino GP victor starts Misano's second weekend with the fastest time in FP1
Marc Marquez, racing for Gresini Ducati in MotoGP, led the first practice session for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Jorge Martin. The session took place under variable weather conditions.
Following the cancellation of the Kazakhstan Grand Prix, MotoGP will be holding an additional race at Misano this weekend. This event will be the first Emilia Romagna Grand Prix since 2021.
Rainfall during the night resulted in a wet Misano track for the beginning of the first free practice session (FP1). Consequently, only a handful of riders ventured out in the early stages of the 45-minute session, as the conditions gradually got better.
Marc Marquez, who secured victories in the last two races, was among the final competitors to take to the circuit in the first practice session (FP1). However, he still posted the quickest lap time of 1 minute 32.082 seconds, surpassing the current championship leader, Martin.
Pramac rider Franco Morbidelli started his home event impressively in third place. Defending champion Francesco Bagnaia secured fourth on his factory Ducati, just ahead of Aprilia's Maverick Vinales.
At the beginning of FP1 at Misano, just three racers hit the track. Luca Marini from Honda and Pedro Acosta from Tech3 chose wet tires, whereas Brad Binder on the factory KTM opted for slick tires right off the bat.
Consequently, Binder secured the fastest time in the first part of FP1, with the South African clocking a best lap of 1:33.843 during his early runs on slick tires.
Riders such as Vinales, Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo, and Acosta each took their turn leading the times as the track conditions kept getting better.
Approximately five minutes before the end, Martin moved to the lead position with a time of 1 minute and 32.260 seconds. Shortly after, the Pramac rider improved his performance with a time of 1 minute and 32.145 seconds.
As the session approached its conclusion, this seemed likely to secure the leading position. However, Marc Marquez managed to take the lead on his second-to-last fast lap with a time of 1 minute and 32.120 seconds.
During his last circuit, Marquez clocked in at 1 minute and 32.082 seconds, edging out Martin by a slim margin of 0.063 seconds. Martin's time was only slightly slower than the fastest lap recorded in the first practice session of the San Marino Grand Prix, which was held under completely dry conditions.
Martin finished ahead of his Pramac teammate Morbidelli by 0.123 seconds at the end, while Bagnaia jumped to fourth place late with a lap that was 0.118 seconds faster than Vinales' best time.
Alex Marquez secured sixth place riding the Gresini Ducati. Acosta led the KTM contingent by finishing seventh, ahead of Binder. Quartararo, riding for Yamaha, and Miller on the other factory team KTM, completed the top ten.
Marini finished as the top Honda rider in 17th place, whereas Alex Rins from Yamaha logged the fewest laps, completing only four.
