Marc Marquez Secures Triumphant Victory at Aragon MotoGP, Ending Nearly Three-Year Drought
Marc Marquez admitted to "putting pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I didn't enjoy the Sprint because I was aware of the significance of today."
After nearly three years without a win, Marc Marquez broke his dry spell last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP. He described the weekend as "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, triumphed decisively in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marc Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which remained wet due to rain that fell from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
During the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as flawless. He mentioned that they dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had built up over nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we experienced an incredible sensation right from the start," he mentioned. "The race was extremely long, and keeping my emotions in check during the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like a weight of 3-4kg had been lifted off me."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back, winning this was an amazing feat. Right away, I began reflecting on the entire journey, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant support, and the Gresini team in particular offered me a chance. I came in as a novice rider, aimed to give my all, and we achieved our goal. We've set a new objective and will continue to strive forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various things in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "But more than just the podium, it's the Gresini garage that's really something special—it's always lively and full of joy, like a constant celebration."
Other than that, the primary factor was the people surrounding me. In extremely challenging times, being in a profoundly tough situation, having a genuinely compassionate team, truly kind individuals who are enduring even more than I am, is what made all the difference.
"It was an unusual celebration since the excitement and energy were higher in other races, even when celebrating second or third places, compared to today, which was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading in every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling a bit of pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"Today, I felt a lot of self-imposed pressure," he remarked. "You could tell from the Sprint yesterday that I wasn't having fun, because I was aware of the significance of today and recognized the major opportunity it presented."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay focused. When you're fast, it feels like you can handle things, you remain steady and make smart decisions; but you're still the same person. Without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and attempt to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Marquez views this victory as significant as his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first success following his arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on par with the 2021 event in Germany."
“When your team suffers many injuries and is going through a tough period, the significance of each win becomes greater.”
"I did win 60 times, but those two victories, along with my first win in MotoGP, hold the most significance because they boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an extra level of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez’s 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed a win was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the conclusion of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez expressed confidence that a race victory is imminent. He noted that the team will have their chances. However, he emphasized that competing for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that it was just a matter of time before it happened."
