Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Performance at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted he "pressured himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. "During the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial," he explained.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year winless streak by clinching the victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a triumph he called "perfect."
Marquez led the timing charts in all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, clinched a commanding victory in the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session not led by Marquez was the Warm Up, which was damp following rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez stated during the press conference after the race. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose with my team to remain in the garage," he admitted.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey of nearly three years without a win and the relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-class victory.
"In the competition, we felt incredible right from the start," he remarked. "The race was extremely lengthy, and managing my emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back, winning this was extraordinary. Instantly, my mind went to the journey we undertook, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. As a new rider, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and will continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various thoughts during the last few laps.
“In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium,” he mentioned. “Beyond the podium, the Gresini garage is always a source of amusement and joy; there’s always a celebratory atmosphere there.”
"Besides that, the initial factor was the people surrounding me. In times of severe hardship, when you find yourself in an incredibly challenging situation, having a genuinely compassionate team, with truly kind individuals who are enduring even more than I am — that was the crucial element."
"It was an unusual celebration; in other races, the adrenaline was higher even when finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about emotion rather than adrenaline."
After leading all sessions except for the rainy Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he remarked. "As you could see during yesterday's Sprint, I wasn't having much fun because I understood how crucial today was and recognized the significant opportunity it presented."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. With speed on your side, it appears you can handle things well, maintain consistency, and act wisely; however, without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Having secured victory, Marquez ranks this win alongside his 2021 German Grand Prix success, which marked his return to the top after suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez compared it to his experience in Germany in 2021, saying it was equally significant.
"When dealing with numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of wins changes."
"Indeed, I've secured 60 wins, but those two, along with my initial MotoGP victory, hold the most significance as they boost your confidence in a unique manner and provide an additional sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite some time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez expressed his belief that a race victory is on the horizon. He acknowledged that they will have their chances, but emphasized that competing for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that it was only a matter of time before it would happen."
