Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year Drought with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Triumph
Marc Marquez admitted he “felt self-imposed pressure” to deliver a “flawless” performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. Reflecting on the Sprint race, he mentioned, “I wasn’t having fun because I recognized the significance of today.”
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win at last weekend's Aragon MotoGP, describing the weekend as "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Due to rain on Saturday night and Sunday morning, the Warm Up session was wet, and Marquez did not record a lap time, so it was the only session he didn’t lead.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the post-race press conference. He mentioned that they dominated every session, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension he had experienced over nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he felt as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the top class.
"We had a fantastic feeling from the start of the race," he remarked. "The race was incredibly long, and managing emotions during the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like I shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing burden on my back, accomplishing this win felt amazing. Instantly, my thoughts turned to all the steps we took to get here, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
“They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team in particular offering me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. Now, we are setting new goals and continuing to move forward.”
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he remarked. "Beyond the podium, the Gresini garage is always a lively and cheerful place, it's constantly like a celebration there."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. In extremely challenging times, being in a tough spot, having a genuinely compassionate team—people who are even more affected by the situation than I am—truly made a difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since the adrenaline had been higher during other races, even when finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about emotion rather than adrenaline."
After leading in every session except the rainy Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix win.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he commented. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I couldn't enjoy myself because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you possess the necessary speed, it appears that you can handle the circumstances, maintain consistency, and act wisely. However, without that speed, managing the situation becomes incredibly challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading contenders."
Marquez views this victory as comparable to his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which was his first after suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
“I consider it to be on par with the 2021 race in Germany,” stated Marquez.
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of your wins changes."
"Although I won 60 races, those two wins, along with my initial victory in MotoGP, hold the most significance for me because they boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an extra level of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding; it felt effortless and smooth, but I was particularly focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez’s 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he revealed that he had believed winning was achievable since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez noted, "I understood that a race victory is on the horizon. I saw that we will get our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter; we need to continue our efforts for that."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
