Marc Marquez Breaks Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend: Emotional Triumph After Three Years
Marc Marquez "put pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I wasn't having fun during the Sprint because I was aware that today was a crucial day."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year spell without a win by triumphing in the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, calling the event a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second lead, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session not led by Marquez was the Warm Up, which remained damp due to rainfall from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he didn't clock a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez mentioned during the press conference following the race. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, which I chose to skip with the team's agreement."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win and the immense relief he experienced upon crossing the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we felt incredible from the start," he mentioned. "It was an extremely lengthy race, and managing emotions in the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3–4 kilograms."
"With each step, my back felt increasingly burdened, making this victory extraordinary. Right away, thoughts flooded my mind about the journey we undertook, the support from everyone around me, and the love from my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. I came in as a newcomer, aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set new goals, and we're moving forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various things in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "But beyond the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful, it's like a constant celebration there."
"The most important factor was the support from the people around me. When you find yourself in a challenging and overwhelming situation, having a compassionate and understanding team who are even more affected by your struggles can make all the difference."
"The celebration felt unusual since the excitement levels had been higher in other races, even when finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading in every session except the rainy Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed that he experienced some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he admitted. "If you noticed during yesterday's Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I made an effort to stay focused. When you have speed, it seems like you can handle the situation better, showing consistency and intelligence. However, without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and strive to stay competitive with the top contenders."
Having secured the win, Marquez places it alongside his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his comeback after suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on par with the 2021 event in Germany."
"When you face numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of each win changes."
"I indeed achieved 60 wins, but those two triumphs, along with my initial victory in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique manner, providing an extra level of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, and I was in the zone, but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning from his initial ride on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez expressed his confidence in achieving a race victory, stating, "I understood that a win is on the horizon." He noted that the team would have their chances and emphasized that while contending for the championship is a different challenge, it's crucial to continue their efforts towards that goal.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
