China's international partnership universities are experiencing a cooling effect as governmental oversight intensifies. Both students and staff at these schools, previously celebrated for their open academic environments, are witnessing restrictions on student organizations, educational content, and freedom of expression in classrooms.
Richard Li, the leader of a Japanese culture group at a university in China, was approached by a faculty supervisor following a club session. He was led to a secluded area and informed that all his planned activities for the club would be denied. He was astonished by this news.
"The circumstances our group is encountering are unprecedented," stated the 21-year-old. "I never imagined this would occur at a Chinese-foreign cooperative university."
