Lewis Hamilton shares a chilling account of almost drowning during a surfing incident and believing "this is the end"
The F1 champion Lewis Hamilton recounts a horrifying close call with death while riding the waves.
Mercedes Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton disclosed a brush with death during a surfing incident.
During an interview on the ‘Hot Ones’ program hosted by Sean Evans, the seven-time world champion faced a variety of inquiries while sampling various spicy sauces on vegan chicken wings.
Hamilton, an avid fan of thrill-seeking activities outside of his Formula 1 commitments, reminisced about a frightening experience where he almost lost his life surfing alongside the renowned Kelly Slater in Hawaii during 2021.
"Hamilton recounted, 'The waves were towering at 20 feet, and Kelly was adamant, saying, 'You're not going out there.''"
"Beginning my attempt to paddle back to shore, I found myself pulled into the danger zone. Looking behind, I witnessed a series of four waves approaching. In that moment, I thought to myself, 'This is it, it's the end'."
"I tossed my surfboard aside, plunged beneath the waves, and seized the coral below. The sound of the wave breaking overhead was deafening. The force tore my board away and broke it into two pieces."
I resurfaced, struggling to breathe, but as another wave approached, I dove again. This happened thrice, and I was on the verge of suffocation, nearly losing my life to drowning.
"Following that, I had immense respect for the surfers."
At the age of 39, the individual from Britain first took up surfing in 2014 and has been passionately dedicated to the sport ever since.
In a 2019 conversation with pro surfer Kai Lenny, Hamilton shared, "I've spent an insane amount of time this year just watching surfing. Literally every day, I'm scouring the internet for any surfing content I can find."
"Riding the waves is an unparalleled sensation. It fills me with joy. Words can't express the depth of my affection for surfing. Standing up on the board offers a unique thrill that's second to none."
