Lewis Hamilton Discusses the Effectiveness of Mercedes' Imola F1 Enhancements
Mercedes' Imola Improvements Evaluated by Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton has stated that the enhancements made to the Mercedes car had minimal impact on their performance during the F1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Mercedes rolled out the newest set of enhancements for their challenging and unpredictable W15 at Imola, succeeding the initial segment of an improvement package that premiered in Miami a fortnight ago.
In Sunday's grand prix, Hamilton secured a sixth-place finish, just one spot higher than his teammate George Russell, who pitted twice. Their leading Mercedes ended the race 35 seconds after Red Bull's Max Verstappen crossed the finish line, achieving his fifth win in the last seven races.
The seven-time world champion minimized the significance of the recent upgrades post-race, stating they had "not a big difference."
Hamilton noted, "They're incremental improvements, but quite minimal."
"In the second segment, my speed was on par with the leaders. However, I believe we're still missing by about two or three-tenths."
Despite the appearance of only a slight progress, Mercedes leader Toto Wolff expressed that he has gained “more confidence” in the belief that his team is now on the correct developmental trajectory, following two disappointing seasons marked by lackluster performance.
He explained, "What we're observing with the car currently is the benefit of the small improvements we're implementing, as opposed to waiting for a significant overhaul. These enhancements are effectively optimizing the car's balance and overall performance."
"However, it's in these areas where you might improve by a tenth or even a tenth and a half, yet simultaneously, competing teams are also advancing."
"We're on a path where the car's improvement is evident. It's not about the stock price soaring straight up; it's expected to fluctuate [makes gesture]. What matters is that we're heading in the right direction, and currently, my confidence is even stronger."
Hamilton committed a significant mistake in the race as he veered off course at Acque Minerali, ending up navigating through the gravel.
"Hamilton admitted, 'I believe I ended up losing roughly five seconds due to that mishap.'"
"In that case, it resulted in me emerging behind Fernando, leading to a further loss of several seconds. All things considered, I estimate the total time lost to be around eight seconds."
"Though it wasn't perfect, there was no drop in rankings."
