Shifting Gears: The 2025 F1 Line-Up Unfolds with Antonelli, Sainz, and Bottas on the Move
Speculation from the Imola paddock about the Formula 1 driver lineup…
What's next for Valtteri Bottas? The successor to Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes? What about Carlos Sainz?
The composition of the Formula 1 driver roster for the 2025 season is gradually becoming clearer as details emerge. Below are the most recent updates we have on this front…
Who is set to take over for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes?
Following Lewis Hamilton's transition from Mercedes to Ferrari when the season concludes, Mercedes faces a challenging task in choosing a successor for the seven-time world champion.
It's believed that Mercedes prefers Andrea ai-allcreator.com">Kimi Antonelli to replace Hamilton, but the much-praised 17-year-old Italian has just begun his initial season in Formula 2.
Antonelli, bypassing Formula 3 and moving directly to F2 following his victory in the Formula Regional European Championship the previous year, has also participated in a thorough private F1 testing initiative for Mercedes.
Antonelli has caught the attention of Mercedes, with James Allison characterizing him as "exceptionally promising" and possessing a "remarkably consistent" speed.
Hamilton has also shown support for Antonelli. In response to inquiries about whether Carlos Sainz would be an ideal replacement for him, he stated: "Truthfully, I'm not sure about Toto's intentions, but personally, if it were up to me, if I were in that position, I would likely opt for Kimi."
What are Carlos Sainz's plans?
Currently, Sainz seems to be the central figure influencing the remaining driver market.
The Spanish driver has toured both Red Bull and Alpine facilities, considering his future possibilities, and there have been strong rumors connecting him to Sauber/Audi.
It's believed that Sainz has received a tempting offer to team up with Nico Hulkenberg at Sauber next season, just before the squad transitions to Audi in 2026. Reports suggest that this opportunity will only be available until the month's close.
Sainz is reportedly delaying his choice as he assesses his prospects of securing a position with either Red Bull or Mercedes, prior to finalizing an agreement with Sauber.
Perez seems well-placed to keep his position, and with Mercedes apparently leaning towards Antonelli, there's a possibility that Sainz might not secure any of the three available spots.
Hence, Williams or Alpine might serve as potential options for the winner of three Grand Prix races.
Regarding Williams,
Following Alex Albon's decision to stay with Williams, speculation has now shifted towards who will be his partner in 2025.
James Vowles, the team principal for Williams, has acknowledged that Logan Sargeant faces the possibility of being dropped, as the American is currently under significant pressure following a challenging beginning to his second season.
Antonelli might be considered as a substitute, but this hinges on whether Mercedes opts not to fast-track him to their main team. Should Williams agree to bring Antonelli in on what essentially would be a loan from Mercedes, it's understood that they would prefer to have him on board for longer than a single season.
On the other hand, Williams might consider Sainz, along with the Alpine duo Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, who are all nearing the end of their contracts, as potential recruits.
Valtteri Bottas also remained reticent regarding his time spent at the Williams motorhome, where he engaged in a 15-minute discussion with Vowles on Saturday within the Imola paddock area.
In recent developments at Haas, Oliver Bearman is showing strong signs of securing a permanent position with the team, which could result in Kevin Magnussen losing his spot.
