Lewis Hamilton Hits His Stride in Monaco: Button and Schiff Analyse His Strong Practice Performance
Jenson Button praised Lewis Hamilton's impressive showing during Friday's races in Monaco, noting that Hamilton seemed to have discovered an optimal setup for his vehicle.
2009 Formula One World Champion Jenson Button is of the opinion that Lewis Hamilton has perfectly fine-tuned his performance with the Mercedes W14, following a remarkable display during the Friday practice sessions at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Hamilton led the morning session and followed closely behind Charles Leclerc in the second practice, concluding a successful day in Monaco.
The seven-time world champion has recognized the necessity to improve his speed during qualifying rounds, after facing difficulties on Saturdays throughout the 2024 season.
Hamilton trails George Russell in the qualifying head-to-head with a score of 1-6, and given the challenging nature of overtaking in Monaco, he must perform exceptionally well in tomorrow's afternoon session.
Evaluating Hamilton's showing in Monaco, Button believes Hamilton swiftly gained assurance in handling the vehicle.
"Button mentioned, 'He comes here with a lot of confidence. He appears quite at ease. However, it's essential to have a car that boosts your confidence, and that's been a challenge for them this season. He's managed to find a perfect balance with the vehicle."
"Adjusting the set-up can lead to a slight improvement, about a tenth or half a tenth, at many circuits. However, at this location, if it boosts your confidence, it can result in a significant advantage."
"That's the reason for the noticeable spaces between the vehicles. As soon as drivers identify a configuration that suits them, the competition in qualifying will become incredibly tight."
In the Mercedes camp, there was a stark contrast in performance during the second free practice session, with Russell managing to secure only the 10th quickest lap.

He was also testing out the updated Mercedes front wing for the weekend to see if it could address the ongoing balance problems they've been experiencing.
Ex-W Series competitor Naomi Schiff sensed something was certainly amiss with Russell's vehicle.
"She mentioned that he brought up the topic of steering torque, expressing curiosity about whether it was a significant problem," she elaborated.
"It's hard to believe there's such a significant gap between Lewis and George in this scenario."
