Jorge Martin Weighs In on Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez’s Aragon MotoGP Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin shares his thoughts on the collision between Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP
Jorge Martin has expressed his views regarding the incident that occurred between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, as he maintained his remarkable consistency and Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
However, Bagnaia experienced a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak by securing second place in both races, making it six consecutive runner-up finishes since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. Following an unsteady start, Bagnaia worked his way up the field and reached Marquez's rear wheel with seven laps remaining.
On the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though it was evident that he was hesitant to fully commit to a particular stance.
"It's challenging," Martin stated. "You ought to question Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see due to the significant amount of dust on that side. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to Joe Roberts' situation in Moto2, where he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was a collision."
"I really hope they're alright because it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no bone fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the San Marino Grand Prix, the next event in the MotoGP World Championship. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have just one week to recuperate after the Aragon race in order to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two victories at Misano in the MotoGP class, it was Martin who triumphed in both races in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his rival's home round with a 23-point lead in the championship.
