Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash at Aragon MotoGP, Eyes Championship Lead at Misano
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor, Pecco Bagnaia, and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved significantly during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin reached Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a lackluster weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak of securing second place, achieving this position in both races over the weekend. This marks the sixth consecutive race since the summer break where Martin has finished in second place.
The weekend for Bagnaia culminated in a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish beginning, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and reached the back of Marquez's bike with seven laps remaining.
On the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. When Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on the situation, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the press conference that followed the race, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to commit strongly to any particular stance.
"It's tough," Martin commented. "You might want to ask Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Undoubtedly, it was hard to see due to the significant amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez, which eventually led to a collision."
"I really hope they're alright. After the accident, they appeared to be near the motorcycles, so fingers crossed they're fit for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed that he had no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, will take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have just one week to recover from the Aragon race before competing at Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP class, it was Martin who triumphed in both races in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his rival's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
