Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies Ahead of San Marino GP
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin came to Aragon lagging five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, which coincided with Martin securing two second-place finishes yet again. Martin has now consistently taken second place in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend concluded with a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. After initially struggling at the start, Bagnaia made his way up the field and caught up to Marquez's rear wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on the mistake, but the two collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin stated. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Absolutely, it's challenging to see clearly since there was a significant amount of dust in that area. I believe that Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was contact."
"Fingers crossed that they're all right. It looked like they were near the bikes following the crash, so I'm hoping they'll be fine for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Bagnaia participated in the 2023 race with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix, and this year he will similarly have a one-week recovery period following Aragon to prepare for Misano.
While Bagnaia has achieved two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This year, the Spaniard heads into his competitor’s home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
