Jonathan Wheatley to Depart Red Bull for Audi: A New Era in F1 Leadership
Jonathan Wheatley to Exit Red Bull Post-2024 F1 Season for Audi Team Leadership Role
At the conclusion of the current season, Jonathan Wheatley will depart from Red Bull, stepping into the role of team principal for Audi.
Jonathan Wheatley, the sporting director of Red Bull, is set to depart from the team when the season concludes, taking up the role of team principal at Audi F1.
Over the years, Wheatley has played a crucial role at Red Bull as the sporting director.
His crucial contributions were key to transforming Red Bull into the top Formula 1 team for pit stops, achieving two global records in the process.
During the 2021 F1 season, Wheatley's prominence increased due to his discussions with ex-race director Michael Masi, which were aired for viewers on television.
Wheatley has been announced as Audi's newest significant acquisition, coming after the appointment of ex-Ferrari chief Mattia Binotto.
He is set to maintain his position at Red Bull throughout the rest of this year, followed by a gardening leave phase in 2025.
Team principal Christian Horner honored Wheatley's service, stating: “Jonathan has been with us for an extensive and triumphant period, spanning 18 years. His role in achieving six World Constructors’ Championships and seven World Drivers’ Championships, initially as Team Manager and subsequently as Sporting Director, will always be a significant highlight in our team's legacy.
"Jonathan is set to keep his role through the conclusion of the 2024 season, with the team aiming to retain their World Drivers’ and World Constructors’ Championships. He will then take a period of gardening leave starting in 2025."
Horner has also announced that a new organizational framework for the team will be unveiled later this month.
The entire team at Oracle Red Bull Racing and Red Bull Technology extend their best wishes to him for his future endeavors and would like to express their gratitude to Jonathan. The robustness and extensive talent within Red Bull Racing opens doors for promoting internal team members. A revamped team hierarchy will be disclosed in the upcoming weeks, he shared.
