Joan Mir Prioritizes New Honda Deal Amid Negotiations: ‘We Didn’t Sign Yet,’ Says Manager
Joan Mir's top priority is securing a new contract with Honda, according to his manager, although the agreement has not yet been finalized.
Paco Sanchez, who manages Joan Mir, has stated that the 2020 MotoGP champion aims to stay with Repsol Honda for the next season. However, he emphasized that “we haven’t signed anything yet.”
This season, Mir has replaced his former teammate Marc Marquez as Honda's leading MotoGP rider. However, due to the persistent technical issues with the RC213V, he is currently ranked 18th in the world championship standings.
The 26-year-old, who achieved one victory, 13 podium finishes, and a world championship with Suzuki, seemed to be seriously considering following Marquez’s example by moving to a strong satellite team.
Davide Brivio, who previously managed the Suzuki team, is expected to make a comeback to MotoGP with Trackhouse Aprilia. Meanwhile, Jorge Martin’s leading Pramac Ducati spot might become available, especially if Pramac decides to transition to Yamaha.
However, various sources indicate that Mir will stay with Repsol Honda, and Sanchez informed Crash.net:
“Joan's main goal since the beginning of the season has been to renew his contract with HRC.
"Even though the bike isn't performing well right now, Joan prefers not to leave quietly. He enjoys competing and wants to assist in developing a more competitive bike."
"We haven't signed any contract yet. We're still in discussions, and I’m hopeful that we can come to an agreement within the next few weeks."
Mir had previously mentioned regarding his future: "I likely need to have a clearer understanding of my plans when I am in Assen."
If Mir renews his contract, he will continue to team up with Luca Marini, who signed with HRC to replace Marquez and has a contract lasting until the end of 2025.
LCR's Johann Zarco has a contract for next season, while his teammate Takaaki Nakagami's current agreement ends this year.
