Joan Mir Eyes Continued Partnership with Repsol Honda Amid Negotiations, Says Manager
Joan Mir prioritizes new Honda agreement, yet 'signature still pending'
The representative for Joan Mir has verified that securing a deal with HRC remains the top focus for the 2020 MotoGP titleholder, although 'it's not official yet'.
Paco Sanchez, who represents Joan Mir, the MotoGP titleholder of 2020, has made it clear that Mir's main objective is to continue with Repsol Honda in the upcoming season, however, he emphasized that a contract has not been finalized yet.
Mir has succeeded his previous team-mate Marc Marquez as Honda's leading rider in the MotoGP this year. However, due to persistent technical issues with the RC213V, he currently ranks 18th in the global championship standings.
The 26-year-old, who achieved a victory and secured 13 podium finishes along with a world championship at Suzuki, seemed to be considering following in Marquez's footsteps by moving to a strong satellite team.
Ex-Suzuki squad leader Davide Brivio's comeback to MotoGP, aligning with Trackhouse Aprilia, appeared to be a clear choice, whereas Jorge Martin's championship-leading position at Pramac Ducati could be available too (though Pramac may transition to Yamaha).
However, numerous sources indicate that Mir is set to stay with Repsol Honda, as Sanchez confirmed to Crash.net:
From the season's outset, Joan's main goal was to secure a contract extension with HRC.
"Despite the motorcycle currently lacking in competitiveness, Joan is not one to bow out quietly. He prefers to engage in the struggle and assist in developing a motorcycle that can contend."
"However, no formal agreement has been signed at this point. Negotiations are ongoing, and it is my hope that we will be able to finalize an agreement in the coming weeks."
Mir previously mentioned regarding his future plans, "Likely in Assen, I need to clarify my intentions."
Should Mir secure a new contract, he will continue to team up with Luca Marini, who stepped in for Marquez at HRC, under an agreement that extends through the conclusion of 2025.
LCR's Johann Zarco has a contract extending into the next season, whereas his teammate, Takaaki Nakagami, is currently on a deal that ends this year.
