AI Has Permanently Captured James Earl Jones' Iconic Darth Vader Voice
James Earl Jones, who could turn the Dark Side into an enticing prospect with his voice alone, has passed away at 93. His distinctive vocal portrayal of Darth Vader spanned over a dozen Star Wars films and attractions, including A New Hope and Star Tours. He lent the Force a menacing allure that was paradoxically inviting. His death marks the loss of the immense depth, dignity, and authority he infused into the role.
It's under the control of artificial intelligence.
Several years back, during his involvement with "The Rise of Skywalker" where Jones lent his voice to Vader's character for a few dialogues, he indicated a desire to conclude his portrayal of the iconic villain, as reported by Vanity Fair. Faced with the challenge of maintaining the character's presence, especially preserving the distinct voice from the original Star Wars films, Lucasfilm sought the expertise of a Ukrainian firm named Respeecher. This company employs artificial intelligence to replicate Vader's voice, drawing from Jones' previous performances. Importantly, Jones gave his approval for his historical voice recordings to be utilized in training the AI model.
In the end, the project undertaken by Respeecher, carried out during the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, found its way into Obi-Wan Kenobi. The involvement of Vader in any future performances might now hinge on their AI technology. (Requests for comments from representatives of Respeecher and Lucasfilm were not immediately responded to.)
The death of Jones signifies a crucial juncture for the evolution of performances created by artificial intelligence. In the extended strike by Hollywood actors that took place last year, a major contention between the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and film studios centered on the requirement for studios to obtain consent for the utilization of previous performances for AI model training. In the end, SAG-AFTRA achieved protective measures concerning the replication of performances through AI. The current inquiry revolves around the implications of these measures for the portrayal of Darth Vader.
The query becomes especially intriguing in the context of voice acting. The complete replication of vocal performances seems to be more advanced than that of entire acts, yet it also appears more striking.
When Paul McCartney employed artificial intelligence to craft a Beatles tune from old recordings of the iconic group, the outcome appeared ghostly. Upon the demonstration of OpenAI's voice assistant named Sky, Scarlett Johansson was taken aback, feeling distressed and incredulous that her distinctive voice from the movie "Her" seemed to have been replicated. OpenAI refuted claims that Johansson's voice served as a model and subsequently halted the demo. Meanwhile, video game voice actors are striking to secure rights for their vocal work. It's evident that voices are now more prized than ever.
In essence, the future of Darth Vader's voice isn't so much about legal permissions—since Jones has allowed it—but more about the emotional impact. The question is whether Lucasfilm, or its overseer Disney, will choose to create new Star Wars content with an AI-generated Vader voice after Jones has passed. How will audiences react to such portrayals? Given Vader's legendary status, is there a moment when fans should move on?
For years, the use of deceased celebrities, from Audrey Hepburn endorsing Dove chocolates to a digital recreation of Tupac, has been a trend in popular culture. However, Jones stands apart as he appears to be the first celebrity to proactively agree to the use of his legendary image through AI technology before his death. The success of AI-generated Darth Vader will largely depend on the approach taken. A standalone Darth Vader movie might not get the same positive reception as a more subtle appearance, like a brief visitation from a Force spirit or a scene set in the past. This will be a crucial test to gauge the acceptance of the character in the absence of the original actor.
