Friendship on the Brink: Verstappen and Norris Clash at Austrian GP Raises Questions on Rivalry and Camaraderie in F1
Max Verstappen and Lando Norris's friendship is in question following a controversial moment at the Austrian Grand Prix, according to Ted Kravitz. He believes it's unlikely for them to maintain a friendship while also being competitors.
Sky Sports F1 commentator Ted Kravitz believes that Max Verstappen and Lando Norris are unlikely to maintain a friendship due to the intensifying competition between them on the track.
The Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday marked the initial clash between Verstappen and Norris.
Following several rounds of fierce competition, the duo crashed into each other at the third corner.
Verstappen received a penalty of 10 seconds for his involvement in the incident because he was found to have changed direction while braking, which did not leave enough room for Norris and resulted in a collision.
The incident caused both drivers to suffer tire punctures, leading to Norris's retirement from the race, whereas Verstappen managed to cross the finish line in fifth place.
In his post-race commentary, Kravitz shared his insights on the matter, stating, "Regarding the friendship between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, they have been close friends until now. They spend evenings together and travel to the more extended races on the same flight.
"Does this signify the conclusion of the cherished bond between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris? Are their days of vacationing in Ibiza over? Will they no longer attend Martin Garrix performances together? Has mutual respect faded away?"
"Norris expressed his thoughts, emphasizing the point. He mentioned that the glamour of Martin Garrix and private jets isn't the focus. According to Lando, if he [Max] fails to apologize or take accountability, it would diminish his respect for him."
Kravitz further commented, "Max later made it clear that he had no intention of doing that. Upon being informed about the 10-second penalty imposed on him for the collision due to insufficient space given to Lando during the attack, Max responded, 'Absolutely, yes, that's absurd.
"Max's perspective on the matter is noteworthy. He believes, 'If you're Lando, you have the option to go left, right, or pressure me into Turn 3 as much as you like. So, what's expected of me?'"
"Lando's perspective would definitely be, 'My expectation is for you to compete in a fair and transparent manner, ensuring there's always room for me on either side'. On the other hand, Max might respond by asserting, 'You pushed me off the track'. Lando would retort, arguing, 'That's because you changed directions while braking'. And so on and so forth.
"Andrea Stella is highlighting the issue here. Without clear and strict guidelines from the officials on what behaviors are acceptable or not, this is the outcome we'll see."
"The remaining question is, even if the officials had established clear regulations and guidelines about what is permissible and what isn't, would that have prevented an incident like today's? My inclination is to believe it likely wouldn't. But still…"
Following McLaren's enhancements to their car in Austria in the previous season, Norris has emerged as Verstappen's primary competitor.
Consequently, Kravitz believes maintaining a friendship between two competitors vying for the championship is unfeasible, with Austria marking "the initial instance where this became evident."
“Therefore, Christian Horner mentioned over the radio that Lando’s conduct was inappropriate and that Max Verstappen faced unfortunate circumstances,” he elaborated. “And this is characteristic of Red Bull. That’s the reason I posed the question to Christian Horner, ‘Was Max Verstappen simply unwilling to accept second place?’”
"Fascinating, isn't it? Did he really arrive at Red Bull’s home circuit with the mindset of accepting a second place behind McLaren? Perhaps not, that’s the crux. It's possible he could have overtaken Lando, yet it all concluded disastrously. They're bound to point fingers at each other. And perhaps, this marks the termination of the bond between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen."
"Is it conceivable for two competitors vying for the championship to become friends? Absolutely not. It's impossible for them to be exchanging all these experiences and enjoying themselves in Ibiza with Martin Garrix and so on. Friendship between them is out of the question. So, was today the initial instance we witnessed it?"
