Fernando Alonso's opinion on Max Verstappen's early retirement rumors
"That was my mindset when I was Max's age."
Fernando Alonso acknowledges that, during his early career, he found it impossible to step away from Formula 1, addressing comments made by Max Verstappen.
Current Formula 1 titleholder Verstappen, who is 26 years old, has frequently stated that he plans to retire from racing while still young.
In 2018, Alonso stepped away from F1, but after a two-year break, he made his return.
Fernando Alonso, the most senior driver currently competing, has extended his agreement with Aston Martin, ensuring his presence in Formula 1 until the age of 45.
In an interview with The Times, when questioned about Verstappen’s desire to retire early, he responded: "That was my mindset when I was Max's age."
Back in 2007, after winning the World Championship with Renault, I signed a three-year contract with McLaren. At that time, I was absolutely certain it would be my final contract.
"In 2018, I believed it was my final season and bid farewell to Formula 1, feeling that it marked the end of my racing career."
"Even when I chose to quit, I discovered I was unable to do so."
Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula 1 champion, has regained his former confidence after becoming a part of Aston Martin.
The team has ambitious goals for the upcoming years, such as establishing a new headquarters and forming a partnership with Honda to supply engines. This collaboration could be advantageous for the experienced driver.
However, he understands that retirement is inevitable eventually.
"I am certain it will be here again shortly," Alonso stated.
"The instant I decide to completely leave F1, I won't be certain about my next steps."
"It's unusual because we are among the fortunate few, just 20 individuals worldwide, who have the opportunity to drive Formula 1 cars."
"Therefore, it makes sense to believe that you will enjoy this as long as you remain quick and content."
“However, it simultaneously strips away all the sources of your joy in life.”
"To try and minimize the negatives, I'll be making some changes, such as having my family attend more races."
