Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘It’s Not Just One Man’s Job to Fix Things
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin’s difficulties
Fernando Alonso maintains that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than the efforts of a single individual, despite ongoing rumors connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. Once he departs, he will be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about him possibly joining Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
During a statement at Monza, Alonso mentioned that there are still just rumors and emphasized that resolving issues isn't solely one person's responsibility.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and what we're creating. We need to identify what's working well, what's not, and make plans to improve things by 2025."
If Newey is available next year, he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, potentially providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has made substantial investments in a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"An inspiring weekend like this one, from my perspective, will remain entirely unknown."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently been very close, often finishing within two or three seconds of each other. Today was another example of that, but this time I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it to its limits, perhaps even beyond, which resulted in an 11th-place finish."
"Absolutely, it's frustrating. We have to stay patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outpaced by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to improve our performance. We need to step up our game."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"In a span of four months, McLaren advanced from the bottom to securing a podium finish. This serves as a clear example."
“Similarly, Mercedes had the same beginning as we did. We were on par with them for the first four races, yet they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t believe in making excuses.”
However, it doesn't seem probable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car is inadequate and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Insufficient performance in Monza. Below par in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components."
"The strategy is set. The team understands the circumstances and is putting in maximum effort. We're staying together and continuing to strive forward. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we almost got two points, and that's the challenge we face."
