F1 Titans Unite: Adrian Newey and Fernando Alonso to Join Forces at Aston Martin in 2025
What Adrian Newey Has Commented on Regarding Fernando Alonso
Formula 1 icons Adrian Newey and Fernando Alonso are scheduled to team up at Aston Martin next year.
Renowned F1 designer Adrian Newey is preparing to collaborate with double world champion Fernando Alonso.
The 65-year-old is anticipated to join Aston Martin next year, with an announcement likely to come on Tuesday. Reports indicate that he has signed a five-year deal that could earn him up to £30 million annually.
In 2025, Adrian Newey, the departing chief technical officer of Red Bull, will have the opportunity to collaborate with Fernando Alonso. In previous interviews, Newey has expressed his deep admiration and respect for Alonso.
In the past, Newey has specifically mentioned Alonso and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton as drivers he would like to collaborate with.
"Obviously, the primary regret is not having had a more extended partnership with Ayrton [Senna]," Newey mentioned to the BBC in an interview conducted last year when questioned about any regrets he might have.
When it comes to drivers, I've always admired Fernando Alonso. It's a disappointment that we never got to collaborate because I hold him in high regard.
To be honest, my primary focus is on living in the present and looking ahead to the future rather than dwelling on the past.
"Regrets? Absolutely not. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have experienced the opportunities I've had, collaborated with the individuals I have, and encountered the people I've met."
According to motorsport advisor Helmut Marko, Red Bull tried to recruit Alonso earlier, but the effort was unsuccessful, which delayed Newey's chance to collaborate with him.
Marko shared on the Inside Line F1 podcast that they had discussions with Alonso around 2008, before they began their winning streak.
“It seems he didn't believe we were serious, so it never came to fruition.”
There were speculations in 2019 that Red Bull was considering Alonso.
In an interview with Spanish magazine Esquire, Newey commented on the situation, saying, "It appears he has faced unfortunate outcomes due to some of his decisions, but in our conversations, he has always been very courteous."
"Fernando frequently outperforms the capabilities of his car. In my opinion, this is the hallmark of an exceptional driver – shining even without top-tier equipment."
