Max Verstappen’s Growing Frustration: Red Bull’s Decline Raises Concerns for Future Seasons
Concerns raised to Max Verstappen about the downfall of the RB20
"The main issue will be if a rift develops between him and the team"
Max Verstappen is feeling "angry" and "frustrated," and has been warned that his troubles will only increase if Red Bull's issues persist into the next year.
The F1 titleholder began this season just as strongly as he finished the last, but his RB20 has faced a surprising decline in performance in the latest races.
Currently without a victory in six races and seeing his lead in the drivers' championship diminish, Verstappen's struggles during the Italian Grand Prix last weekend have become a topic of discussion.
"It's devastating for team morale to end up 37 seconds behind the race leader, with your teammate trailing by another two positions and an additional 13 seconds," Natalie Pinkham mentioned on the Sky F1 podcast.
"Last year, he achieved his 10th straight victory in this race. This year, the situation is completely different."
"If Max starts feeling out of sync with the team, it will really frustrate him."
If he’s already telling the team in China that they’re heading in the wrong direction and that the car has significant issues, it’s unreasonable to expect those problems to be resolved quickly.
"It transformed from being dominant to becoming a monstrous force in under half a season. This must be incredibly frustrating for him."
"He's unaccustomed to losing, so he's pushing himself hard. He's achieving excellent outcomes, such as at Zandvoort, despite the limitations of the car, not because of its capabilities."
"We're witnessing a new level of determination from Verstappen. He's pushing himself to the limit, making the most out of a difficult situation with subpar equipment."
"We are getting to know him as a driver, but he will become irritated."
"The truly concerning aspect is if this unavoidably continues into 2025."
"He's often seen losing his temper"
Following a period of uncertainty within Red Bull marked by internal turmoil involving Christian Horner, Jos Verstappen, and Helmut Marko, Verstappen has decided to remain with the team for the next season.
However, Toto Wolff from Mercedes continues to consider Verstappen as a potential future recruit.
Currently, Nico Rosberg has observed the apparent frustration shown by Verstappen.
"He’s going to be surprised. You can often see him losing his temper. During the race at Monza, after a slow pitstop, he was pounding on the steering wheel," Rosberg remarked.
"He is becoming frustrated and restless as he is accustomed to always coming out on top."
"The entire team is feeling restless, stress levels are increasing, and panic is escalating."
"It's aggravating because they are unaware of the situation and lack comprehension."
"In Zandvoort, they legitimately secured second place. Their car performed well, but Lando managed to surpass them."
"Monza is an exception, so we shouldn't place too much emphasis on the differences in performance."
"However, the upcoming tracks, such as Baku and Singapore, are exceptions…"
"I believe he still has the potential to secure second place and possibly achieve a few wins in the upcoming races."
Lando Norris has reduced the gap in the drivers' standings, bringing Max Verstappen's lead down to 62 points.
Red Bull holds a narrow lead of only eight points over McLaren in the constructors' championship.
