Esteban Ocon Defends His Racing Integrity Amidst Monaco Grand Prix Fallout, Vows to Compete in Canada
Esteban Ocon responds to "uninformed comments," asserting his intention to compete in the Canadian Grand Prix.
"I've erred in judgment. We're only human."
Esteban Ocon has addressed the intense backlash he faced following his involvement in an incident at the F1 Monaco Grand Prix.
Ocon collided with his Alpine teammate, Pierre Gasly, following an aggressive maneuver on the first lap – marking another incident in a series of confrontations with teammates throughout his F1 career.
Alpine leader Bruno Famin emphasized that there would be repercussions, and it has been suggested that Ocon might be removed from the upcoming F1 Canadian Grand Prix scheduled for next weekend.
The driver from France has issued a statement which reads: “A lot has been discussed following the Monaco Grand Prix. Although I have been overwhelmed with messages of encouragement, it has been profoundly disheartening to see the level of abuse and negative remarks directed at me online concerning my personality, my driving skills, and my professional journey.
"Due to the dedication, effort, and numerous sacrifices from a host of individuals, I've managed to compete in more than 140 grand prix events since beginning my career in 2016. I've consistently been a strong contender, and, similar to other racers, I've experienced my fair share of mishaps."
"I've had the fortune of competing with skilled and seasoned colleagues, among them race victors Daniel, Checo, and Pierre, as well as a two-time champion, Fernando.
"As teammates, we frequently began races in close proximity, leading to intense competitions and occasionally, collisions on the circuit."
Certainly, I've had my share of genuine errors. We're not infallible machines; instead, we're competitors striving to our utmost each day to realize our aspirations of claiming victories. Formula 1 is an arena charged with intense emotions and profound dedication. This is something I witness and experience every time I'm at the circuit and online, observing both the positive and negative aspects.
"However, the erroneous claims and severe misrepresentations circulating on the internet lately regarding my capacity to collaborate within a team have been unfounded, painful, and harmful."
"From my initial forays into racing, I've tackled the sport with modesty, dedication, and reverence. These principles were embedded in me early on in life."
"Every racer may seek personal triumph, but at its core, this is predominantly a group endeavor. I've consistently adhered to the directives provided to me, competing to secure the best possible outcome for and alongside my team.
I acknowledged my role in the mishap during the first lap last Sunday, and although I did not finish the race, I am pleased that my team managed to secure a point in a season that has been challenging for everyone involved.
"I hold Pierre in high regard both as a fellow team member and as a rival. Our interactions within the team have always been cooperative and conducted with professionalism, and we will maintain this approach moving forward.
"In Formula One, taking risks is essential for rewards, and this is especially true at race beginnings. The intensity is heightened in Monaco, where the outcome of the first lap often determines your final position."
Ultimately, we're all in competition, and it's the intense, yet fair, competition across all participants that elevates our sport to such greatness and is the primary reason for my deep passion for it.
"I'm eager to take part in the competition in Montreal, surrounded by the incredible Canadian supporters, and I'm excited about the amazing possibilities that lie ahead."
